Christian Living
There was a man who everyone liked. He helped the poor and needy, volunteered whenever he could, always smiled, and never treated anyone badly. He spent a good part of his life traveling around the world doing whatever he could to help those who needed it. He had plenty of friends and no one dared to say anything bad about him.
One day, someone asked him, “James, you’ve done so much for other people all of your life. Why don’t you do something for yourself?” It sounded like a great idea to him. Why not? He found himself walking up to a car dealership. There it is, he thought…a brand new Lamborghini. He walked inside with a huge smile on is face. The salesman already knew who he was; his reputation preceded him.
“Hey James! What brings you down here today?”
“I want this Lamborghini! I’ve always dreamed of having one!”
“That’s great! Come have a seat, let’s put this deal together.”
James was bubbling over with excited. Just thinking…me…in a Lamborghini! As they went over the details, the salesman grew quiet…
“James…I’m gonna be straight forward with you. With your current salary, you simply can’t afford this car…”
“Bob, you have to be kidding me. This is the car of my dreams…!”
“To be honest…your annual salary won’t cover the down payment alone…”
“But I really want this car. You have to be able to do something for me. I’ve helped you so many times before…and the people in the community…!”
“James! Yes…you’re a really nice guy! The most generous man I know! But we have to show the bank that you can pay for the car.”
“I can’t believe this!”
“I’m sorry James. I really am. But I have to follow the bank’s guidelines…”
James walked out of the office broken-hearted. He couldn’t believe it. Despite all the good he’d done…it wasn’t enough to get the car he wanted.
It may seem like James should’ve known better from the start. But I wrote the story this way to teach us one thing; salvation is free, but your sins have to be paid for. Yes…it’s great to be generous and help those who really need it. But Jesus suffered and died so we wouldn’t have to. He paid the price, took the punishment of our sins, but only if we accept Him into our lives. If you haven’t accepted Jesus Christ into your life, you will have to pay the price for your sins. Remember…salvation is free…but in order to make it into Heaven, your sins have to be paid for. Jesus loves you.
