The Gift That Took My Place
My wife mentioned to me that she wanted a horse. I had told her that it was not a good time to buy one, because they were expensive and it would not fit into our budget. I reminded her that she had a birthday coming up soon and I would see how things are in the way of finances then. She looked disappointed.
It has been two months now. Today is my wife's birthday. She thinks that I have forgotten our conversation. I have been secretly saving money to buy her a horse. Somehow I managed to save one thousand dollars .I quickly got out my check book and looked at the balance. I wanted to double check and make sure that the funds where all there. Everything is perfect! I have the right amount.
Off to the sale barn I go. The trip will be long but worth it all. I can't wait to see the expression on my wife's face. I drove all the way feeling rather proud of myself.
Boy! she is going to be surprised.
Driving up to the sale barn, there was a crowd. I parked my truck with the horse trailer attached. I made my way into the sale barn and it caught my eye. It was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen. My wife is the horse expert so I haven't a clue what breed it is. I walked up to the gentleman and said, what kind of breed is that?
He said, "It is called a quarter horse and the color is what you call silver dollar gray."
She sure is a beauty I replied. How much will you take for her? "You can have her for nine hundred dollars sir." Great , I will take her. I paid the man cash and we loaded her up into the horse trailer.
On the way home I was thanking the Lord for all his goodness to me and my wife.
I was trying to imagine the look on her face when she sees this horse.
Here we are at home now and I unload the horse. What a job it was . I am no horse expert for sure.
My wife came driving up. I watched her get out of the car and I ran out to meet her with a flower. Happy birthday sweetheart. She took the flower and went inside. I could tell that she was looking for more. I couldn't wait any longer and I took her in my arms. Honey , I have a surprise for you and it is a good one too.
Together we walked arm in arm to the back of the house. Look out the window and tell me what you see. "I can't believe it" she screamed . " You bought me a horse." "Oh honey, it must have cost a fortune." Then she gave me a kiss and a hug . That was the last of the affection that I would see.Now there was someone else other than me.
It was early in the morning and I crawled out of bed. I came down stairs looking for my coffee. No coffee made? This seemed kind of strange to me, because my wife always made me coffee in the morning. I was searching for my wife, and no answer to my call.
Then I looked out the window and saw it all. There was my wife with her new horse.
I watched her as she brushed the mare down, then she gave it a kiss on the nose. The jealously began to ignite from within. I am jealous over a horse? How ridiculous is this?
Over the next month or two , she spent a fortune having the horse shoed. I would be lucky to get a pair of cheap tennis shoes . It seems that my wife has forgotten all about me. The horse gets three pales of sweet feed a day. All I ever get is a cold hotdog.
I wonder, if this will go on forever. I long to have my wife spend time with me.I watch her from the window as she hugs and kisses her horse. Then reality slaps me in the face. I am to blame here, because I am the one who bought the gift that took my place.
