Hands In Time
The young Science teacher asked, ÒClass, who can name the three states of matter?Ó
Johnny raised his hand at once and said, ÒOhio, West Virginia, and Florida.Ó
Perplexed at the answer and the laughter of the students, the teacher replied, ÒAre you trying to be funny, Johnny?Ó
ÒNo mam, I was born in Ohio, grew up in West Virginia, and IÕm living in Florida. Those three states are all that matter to me.Ó Johnny answered as he grinned.
Shaking her head in disapproval, she conceded, ÒI see your point, but I was really looking for solid, liquid and gas. Now, who can tell me about BoyleÕs Law?Ó
Sally interjected immediately, ÒA watched pot never boils! My mother says that all the time, and sheÕs never wrong.Ó
ÒI should have listened to mine and married a rich man. I wouldnÕt be here now.Ó
ThereÕs been many a wise crack in my Science classroom over the years, and when the kids get tired of it, they ask me to stop and just give them the right answer. So, before I continue, let me give you a few scientific truths. A solid has a definite size and shape that resists change. Liquids have a fixed volume, but their shape is determined by the contour of the container holding them. A gas can spread into any space, but its volume is determined by the size of the container holding it. You can usually change matter from one state to another by adding or removing heat. Freeze water Ð you get ice; boil water Ð you get steam.
So how does this relate spiritually? LetÕs look at our evil hearts. God said they were hard as stone, a solid, and incapable of change. We are changed people because God gave each of us a new heart, one where His Holy Spirit lives. Yet, as the church, ChristÕs body on Earth, we still need all three qualities to matter. We are to remain fixed solidly to His truths. We should not remain solidly fixed within our pews and seldom change in the ways we relate to those outside the faith. Our praise and thanksgiving should flow from our lips easily, like a liquid as we speak to others and ourselves. Some, though, forget the basic truths and easily flow into molds made by those around them. They take the shape of the world. Yet, like gases, we are to fill the world with the fresh aroma of Christ. However, some, like gases, fly off the handle when heated; others just disappear from body life as they deal with the pressures of life. Although God does not change, it is our destiny to change. He wills it.
As Christians, we need to ask ourselves what really matters to us? If it is Christ and doing His will, then we must act like His hands and feet in time Ð true saints. Only He keeps us rock solid, fills us with living water, and expands us to be more like Himself so that He can attract others through us. We must learn to trust Him to fill us before we fill all in every way.

which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.
