Turning into the driveway one evening in December, 1996, she noticed that the Buick was gone. The truck, however, was still in its spot, so she figured her parents had gone out shopping, hopefully for her. The Christmas lights weren’t on, but the fluorescent globes along the stone walkway illuminated her path as she made her way to the front entrance. When she paused on the stoop to find the front door key, it began.
The noise came from behind her, and she could hear the quickly moving villain as the fallen oak leaves in the front yard crackled under the weight of each step he took. He was getting closer! Heart pounding, hands shaking, she couldn’t get the key to slide into the lock.
Frantically, she pounded on the wooden portal and screamed, “Someone open the door!” No one came, and the door remained barred. She thought, Run for the back door, but it was too late. He was there, and as he thrust himself upon her like an animal, he snarled, “Meow.” It was Baseball, our Garfield-like, orange Tabby. Overweight, and usually less than cordial, he wanted Acacia to embrace him. All he really wanted to say was, “I love you!”
Baseball loved Acacia because Acacia first loved him. When he was a kitten, she held him, fed him, kissed him, cuddled him, and showered him with love daily. Every good thing that came to him came from her hand. For a time, his whole life depended upon her mercy. It was quite a loving relationship.
The term mystery in the New Testament is not a secret revealed only to a few who then vow to keep it from those outside their group. Neither is it something that is incomprehensible. However, a mystery in Scripture is only understood when the Holy Spirit opens our hearts to the truth. God reveals the mystery to us. He makes it known to His children. The natural man cannot understand it, yet we have been given understanding about the mystery of God’s will and His purpose in salvation.
God, according to His own good pleasure, for a reason known only to Him, decided to reveal the mystery to His saints. He came to say, “I love you,” and to initiate a loving relationship with us. Therefore, as we rejoice in that truth, we come to understand our role in offering God’s truth to others. As we come to see that everything we are and have comes from God’s gracious riches that abound to us in Christ, we begin to overflow with His love and must offer that same love to others. The mystery of the Messiah – Christ – made us acceptable to God, because the mystery Messiah signed in for us with His blood. So, then, what’s our saintly line? We are fishers of men who praise God for His indescribable gift!
