Prayers
A co-worker taught me how to pray. She told me to lie on my bed with my arm extended to connect with God. So, I waited in silence until I felt the hand of God.
At the same time, I was journaling free-flow about three pages a day when it occurred to me that I could write to God. In time God would drop ideas for poetry that interrupted my thoughts. He mainly inspired through a thought-by-thought style. I really enjoyed the editing process because it was there that words became pretty.
God led me to be on an altar team when I barely even knew the Bible. In fact, a year earlier I looked at one intercessor on the prayer team and felt sorry for her. It was the last place I would choose. Some people thought otherwise and said, "So, now you are on the elite team." Apparently I did not get the memo with the ranking of gifts and ministry.
After about five years I got bored with that and got the idea that. I wanted to find a Spirit-led intercessory team. I looked all over and found nothing that looked or felt right. Some were too pop-corny and others were constant chatter. I was looking for people who knew how to wait, watch and listen. Finally, I found that group. I loved going there every Wednesday night. The worship was Spirit-led and the leaders took prayer seriously. They wanted to pray God's heart and not human-reactive prayers.
Everyone in that church was encouraged to read the book called Rees Howells Intercessor. This man went from loving on and praying for the salvation of individuals as well as healing to gathering a team to pray for the strategy of World War Two. It is a book that raises the bar for any bored or even seasoned intercesor. I gave the book to several friends and some got mad because they thought they could never get to that level.
But then I was invited to a conference with tons and tons of flags and a beach ball that got tossed when the waves passed through. I visited that church that went back to their usual style service but they had a small Charismatic service later in thw evening. I went there and discovered a prophetic and spontaneous worship service like no other. Bethel and IHOP move over and I mean it. These guys could sing in the Spirit and flag and do prophetic acts and sketch. It was an artistic expression of God.
At the same time I began to go on urban mission trips that had strategy for the region as well as evangelism, outreach, and worship. There was a mix of old and young; zeal and wisdom; urban and suburban, and denominations. During these trips I met up with some of the most cutting-edge Christians and it messed me up for normal living.
I was invited to a newly founded church that seamed to have potential on the international prophetic and worship front but it just was not anywhere as mature as what I've known.
If you are growing in God then He will lead you in your training process. Sometimes it will be alone with Him. Other times He will lead you to the training that fits with your destiny. Let Him lead you by the hand personally and not through a relationship of a other. Spiritual mentors can help but utimately it is between you and God.
