Almost immediately, everything played out in slow motion before her eyes. She found herself standing a distance away from the kitchen sink when the new dress she had just handed to her daughter was shoved right back into her face. She wasn’t done processing what had just happened when the words “I hate red, you know that, why would you get me a red dress” rushed through her ears.
She stood there wondering what she was going to do with the other two dresses she had bought. They were on sale, all three of them. Three beautiful red dresses for each of her three girls. It seemed like it would be a great idea to turn them into triplets for at least a day. Now that her eldest had rejected the dress, she was torn between giving out the dress to the other girls. She approached her third child and gave her the dress. Though she accepted it, her daughter wasn’t enthused about the present as she would have expected.
Her third girl was colour blind, so she couldn’t tell whether she liked the dress or not because she was probably mixing up the colour with another. It was probably appearing to her as a dull colour. Anna, her second daughter, however, behaved differently. She took the dress, touched it, felt it, smelled it and was very thankful. She felt every detail of the dress and realised it had beads around the neck and some designs in the front and at the bottom. The dress felt very soft, she loved how it felt through her fingers. After taking her sweet time to know the dress, she told her mum that she wished she could see how the dress looked like. That’s because she was blind and couldn’t see exactly what she was holding. But her mum replied saying, no honey, you will probably appreciate it less if you actually see it.
And maybe she was right. The more abilities we have and the more options the Lord blesses us with, the higher the probability of being less appreciative. Because of the many options we have, we become very picky. While Anna was physically blind, she was the one who could really see what she had received and the love her mum had for her. She trusted that her mother would get her the best and most beautiful present. The act of giving and receiving from her mum meant so much more than the gift received.
Although Anna’s two sisters could see, the many abilities and options blinded them. The ability to see what God is doing amid the many options, and appreciate His love and goodness is the true sight. We are likely to reject the good things the Lord brings to us because of other blessings we have received from Him. In the past, we were blind to the truth, and you would think that after having our eyes graciously opened, we will appreciate God and His ways more. Rather, our desires override His will and above all, we ignore His goodness.
