As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Matthew 9:9-13 NIV
In the eyes of those who were healthy, they did not need a doctor. Also, those who thought of themselves as righteous had no need for a Savior. Jesus dined with tax collectors and sinners, as they knew they needed more than what they had. They needed a Savior. We all need a Savior. It is just that most are spiritually blind and don’t see the need which they have. The Jewish leaders did not show mercy through their words, nor their deeds. To God, mercy is much more important than sacrifice. A sacrifice means nothing if the giver of it is not merciful. Jesus did teach the leaders about their shortfalls, but, they were too blind to see. They chose to ignore His teachings and warnings.
It is wonderful to know that we have One who has saved us from the eternal fate of those who do not believe. We are saved from our sins. Jesus has set us free.
