‘And they were afraid’ Luke 8:35 (NRSV)
People’s responses to Jesus were vast and varied. In this story, the onlookers were afraid. The status quo had been disrupted, an upheaval from what was expected and familiar had occurred and no one seemed to be very happy about it. In fact, the inhabitants of the surrounding area asked Jesus to leave ‘for they were seized with fear.’ His presence and power were not welcome.
Yet one man felt just the opposite. He begged to remain with Jesus. He had been touched by the Healer and was now found listening intently at Jesus feet ‘clothed and in his right mind.’ Jesus’ miraculous work in the man’s life became an invitation to sit and worship the Saviour.
How do we respond when God moves in and does a new thing in our life? Are we afraid because what is familiar has been rearranged? When God’s plans unfold and they are different to ours, do we face them with fear and resistance? Or like the man delivered from demons do we welcome the work of God in our lives?
Admittedly sometimes God works in ways that we may not understand, but can we trust Him regardless? Can we believe He loves us entirely? Can we walk into the place He is calling us even when it is dark and not making sense? Let us face the future God has planned for us with joy and anticipation, and declare with David ‘even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.’ Psalm 23:4 (NRSV)
