‘That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood rose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built.’ Luke 6:48 (NRSV)
Christians who are ‘well built’ are people who have grounded themselves on the deep foundations of prayer and scripture. Their lives are established on these two crucial bedrocks. Consequently they are immovable. When the storms blow and the rivers rise, that is, the pressures of life attempt to overwhelm them, they are not shaken. Faith in a loving God and confession and belief in His promises holds them fast.
Like a mature tree flourishing by a river bank, they can’t be uprooted. They’ll continue to prosper, bearing good fruit as they are fed daily by communion with their Heavenly Father through prayer and the Holy scriptures.
The challenge is to ensure we are that house built upon a solid foundation. Are our foundations right? Do we even have any? Can we name what keeps us grounded and secure? Only the wise builder began his home with a sure foundation. The foolish builder didn’t bother. But Jesus warned what the result of that decision was: ‘When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.’ (Luke 6: 49)
At the beginning of this New Year let’s resolve together to heed Jesus’ warning by hearing and acting upon his words. Let’s seek the Lord diligently in prayer and through the guidance of the scriptures. Only then will we be able to stand strong against the adversities that life brings our way.
