The subject of ‘predestination’ has been recurrently discussed in the body of Christ, but the unfortunate thing is the misinterpretation or wrong presentation of the word.
Many people have been made to believe that whatever befalls a man is his destiny – that is what God has predestined for him; either bad or good. This is not true because God did not predestine anyone for a disastrous life. Whatever is the end product of a man’s life, good or bad, is a summation of the choices he made at several junctions of his life.
Some people also have misinterpreted the word ‘predestination’ to be our professions. And so they make some people, even believers, believe that they would have prospered in life if they had chosen a better or high profile profession. This is also nothing but a seeming truth. The promise of prosperity for believers is regardless of their profession as we shall see later.
The scriptural truth is that we all have a common predestination. Whether you are an engineer, a doctor, a farmer, or what have you – we all are predestined to be like Christ. Anyone who was predestined by God was predestined to conform to the image of His only begotten Son (Romans 8:30), and not to become a farmer or a pharmacist.
Hence, our professions are not supposed to debar us from blooming wherever we are stationed. Any believer that chooses to be a farmer or teacher, for instance, that is not blooming will still not bloom if he had chosen to be a medical doctor or lawyer contrary to our prior belief. We are to bloom wherever we find ourselves!
When we talk about blooming, we cannot but make reference to flowers as the word is a register in that regard. So, when we say flower blooms, it simply means it produces petals and, as a result, becomes more attractive. Note that this does not necessarily mean to produce fruit; in fact, the truth is that every plant blooms before producing fruit. Thus, we can say that to bloom means to shine, to project beauty, to sparkle, or to reflect glory. It can also be extended to mean to flourish!
Having said that, it is needful to reiterate that this is what is expected of us; we were all made to reflect and project the glory of God wherever we find ourselves.
– We were made to shine (Philippians 2:14-15)
– We were made to project or reflect the glory and beauty of God (2 Corinthians 3:16)
– We were made to be stars (Daniel 12:3)
– The end product of our predestination is glorification (Romans 8:30)
– We were made to be attracting men to the glory of God (Matthew 5:14-16; Isaiah 60:1-4)
These are what we were predestined for – to flourish to the glory of God, our profession notwithstanding. The promise of God for believers that obey Him is to prosper in WHATEVER they do (Psalms 1:3; Deut. 28:8; Joshua 1:8).
However, the fact that God has predestined each and everyone one of us to bloom does not mean we will bloom automatically. This is where I do encourage people not to give themselves to the deceit of ‘whatever will be will be’. We have to engage ourselves in partnership with God to ensure that whatever has been predestined come to pass eventually. God will never force anything on anyone, and that’s the more reason we have to be engaged in the journey to living a blooming life.
If you have ever wondered why some genuinely born again Christians died, even in their old age, without reflecting the glory of God, this is one of the most likely reasons: It is not that they weren’t predestined for it; it’s probably because they believed that their destiny is in God’s hands only, and they have nothing to do with making it come to pass. So they folded their arms supposedly waiting and trusting destiny to be fulfilled. I only hope it works that way but regrettably, it doesn’t!
Even salvation does not solely depend on God. Although salvation is God’s gift and has been made available through the death of Jesus Christ, it demands our faith. We are saved by grace through faith. The grace is solely God’s provision, but the faith requirement is our own duty to fulfil – that’s partnership! God releases grace; we release faith, and the combo produces salvation! Now if it takes God and you to be saved, then it will take Him and yourself to bloom. Our blooming is in God’s hands but it requires our cooperation with him.
The good news, however, is that God is ever faithful and has played His part necessary for our blooming; so He is never the reason for our failure to bloom. It is because we have not found and played our distinctive roles. God’s part is available but it is resting on the discovery and willingness to play our roles.
What are our roles?
