When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born. “In Bethlehem in Judea,” they replied. Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.” Matthew 2:3-5a and 7-8 NIV
Why was Herod disturbed? Simply put, he had no room in his kingdom for another king. No one was to take away his kingdom. Why were all in Jerusalem disturbed? They were disturbed because Herod was disturbed. Everyone knew that Herod was not a nice king. He was only concerned about himself. If he was disturbed, who could possibly guess what terrible things he might do. People were afraid of him.
Why did Herod have a secret meeting with the Magi? I believe it is so that he could have his evil plan carried out without his whole kingdom being made aware of it. Herod wished to present a false impression as to how he ruled. He wished that people would approve of him.
It took nothing for God to see into the heart of Herod. He thusly warned the Magi not to return to Herod. God knows the heart of all mankind. Do not for a minute think that you can fool God. He knows everything in your heart and mind. Unless one turns their heart, mind, and soul over to Christ, they shall not see the kingdom of God.
