For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee (Proverbs 23:7). This is one Bible verse I’ve always been curious about when it says that the heart thinks, but does it actually think or is this a parable or some type of figure of speech?
A while ago I heard a pastor, Brain Orme, share a true story of a woman who died from being shot to death by an unknown killer, and being that she was an organ donor, she wished for her heart to be donated to someone who needed a heart transplant.
Not too long after that woman died, another
woman was in need of a heart transplant, so the doctors removed the heart from the woman who’d been shot to death, and they put it into the woman who needed the heart transplant, and she lived. But even though the woman who needed the heart transplant lived, she started having very strange dreams following the heart transplant.
In all the dreams, the woman was being shot to death, and she could see the face of the killer. Remembering that her heart transplant came from a woman who’d been shot to death, she wondered if the man she saw in the dream could be the unknown killer the police were unable to find.
So she went to the police station and gave the police a description of the man she saw in her dream, and the police were actually able to find the man who killed the women who donated her heart. It turns out that, some years ago, science has discovered that the heart actually has its own brain that has a memory of its own.
So when Scripture says, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he,” that’s not just a parable, but it’s true. Taking our thoughts captive go way beyond just changing the way we think in our heads, but it also has to do with changing the way we think in our hearts.
This is why Scripture also says to guard our hearts because everything we do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23). The renewing of the mind has to do with renewing our brains thought patterns and renewing our hearts thoughts as well.
God made our human bodies extremely complex, and the Bible has clear evidence of this well before science ever started proving its truth.
It’s not impossible for thoughts to be rewired, but it does take the help of the Holy Spirit to give us the strength we need to overcome trauma from our past. We can do all things through Christ who gives us strength, and the renewing of our minds in our hearts is no problem for our God if we believe.
