“However, the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands. As the prophet says: ‘Heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool. What kind of house will you build for Me? says the Lord. Or where will My resting place be? Has not My hand made all these things? (Acts 7:48-50)
I had a hard day's work at the office and surely needed a good night's rest. So I retired early that night, after my warm milk and cookies, not even imagining that my sleep would evolve into any type of dream world.
Then it happened, unbeknownst to my interest of getting a good rest, I suddenly found myself looking down at the foot of my bed. "What is this?" I exclaimed. "It looks like a footstool. But it can't be so, as it's a large world globe with legs."
Then as this dream progressed in my mind, I suddenly observed an unusual character standing by this strange globe footstool. He was dressed in Bible times garb, and spoke in a strange curious odd brogue, being careful in giving the right English pronunciations.
"Who are you? Why are you here, and what do you want?" I shouted out in fear and bewilderment.
"I'm your conscience," he replied "I'm here to examine your earthly sense of right and wrong, to check your earthly scruples, and to examine the ethics of your reasoning. (John 14:26). Do you not remember last Sunday, when you questioned your preacher's sermon topic of Our Unlimited God?"
And with that he commenced to lift up the top of the world globe footstool, exposing a very interesting Bible verse.
"Thus says the LORD, "Heaven is My throne and the earth is My footstool. Where then is a house you could build for Me? And where is a place that I may rest? "(Isaiah 66:1)
He then started his sermon. I never realized my conscience could speak so eloquently. You see, earth is the place where God puts His feet. It's where He reaches out to take our hands, where He reaches down to hear our prayers and meet our needs. We serve an unlimited heavenly Father, One who is infinitely unrestricted, unrestrained and boundless in His power and majesty.
Heaven is His throne, His place of power and glory, His abode of rest. It is the center of His presence and His unfailing love and help for us all. In other words, we are to look upwards to God in heaven and direct all our devotion towards Him, as He is not limited to any earthly abode. He is surely not confined to any particular earthly place.
Conversely, we all live in a footstool world, so to speak. A footstool is limited with respect to what it can hold. It cannot hold the weight of your problems. It cannot hold your worries. It cannot hold the weight of your hurt and pain. It cannot hold any of life's critical concerns. You don't sit on a footstool, you rest your feet there.
"So where do we go for God's help, if not a foot stool?" I ask.
"In His heavenly presence," he answered.
Wow, did he ever get the message across, if only in my dream! Yes, I will never question my pastor's spiritual wisdom ever again.
And what happened to this perfect stranger? This is one of those GOK (God only knows) questions. Real or not, he got his point across to me that night (Isaiah 42:16).
You see, the message my pastor delivered last Sunday was surely the Bible truth. Although a little steep in Bible doctrine for my finite mind, I had no spiritual reason to question his remarks.
God indeed designed the universe, including His throne in Heaven. And the only sufficient cause of this design is God Himself. My pastor then pulled out an old tattered Bible and read Psalm Nineteen. When finished, he added his own commentary, saying, "In this hymn of praise, David reflects on the glory of God, from God's viewpoint of heaven."
He then continued his sermon. "This universe not only provided a Maker but also a Designer. You see, since mankind is a moral and intellectual being, mankind must have had a Maker who is also a moral and intelligent Being (Acts 17:29). Thus, our attributes argue in support of our earthly abode and God's heavenly dwelling place.
Then, I woke up as suddenly as I had drifted off to my dream world. What was so strange about his sermon conclusion was that he had been reading from Mom's old tattered Bible. Just where did he get this Bible? That fact alone brought me to my knees in my prayer of repentance. (1 John 1:9)
What next for my life? I made an appointment with my pastor for his spiritual help. I really wanted to step out of my limited earthly "foot stool" spirituality speaking and, into a world of unlimited divine resources. (Ephesians 2:6) (Colossians 3:1-2)
My pastor certainly helped me that day. I'll never again doubt my pastor or any of our church leaders. As my pastor so vividly pointed out, God judges us by our actions (Romans 2:12-16) and we will also be accountable for the truth that we possess (Romans 1:19-20). Yes, we all have an inbred sense of right and wrong (Romans 2:16).
Then he quoted Bible teacher, Paul E. Little, "A strong faith in a weak bridge will not bridge the gulf, but a weak faith in a strong bridge will get you to the other side." He then ending by quoting (Hebrews 11:1, 6).
I gave my pastor a big hug, and shouted a big "Amen" that day. Yes, I'm now on his bandwagon. Yes, the earth is truly my Heavenly Father's footstool. Amen!
Author's Postscript
"My heart has heard you say, "Come and talk with me." And my heart responds, "Lord, I am coming." (Psalm 27:8)
Can you relate to this unusual dream blog? Or do you even believe in dreams? Do you believe that God might take the time to talk with you through a dream? Well, from my human standpoint, I sometimes have my doubts as well.
However, the scriptures give us many examples of God revealing spiritual truths through dreams and visions.
"It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions." (Joel 2:28)
Since I am retired, older than dirt and twice as gritty, I guess I fall into the dream category. True to this scripture, I tend to have a vivid recall of the past, but can't seem to have many visions. What day is it?
So just take that warm milk and cookies, lie down to a nice, deep sleep and await God's instructions. Amen!
