‘Then Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking down the body, wrapped it in the linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb that had been hewn out of the rock.’ Mark 15: 46 (NRSV)
Jesus’ body was laid in a cold, damp, dark tomb. He lay alone in the belly of a cave, hewn out of solid rock. It was a most uninviting place. Yet this forlorn place was a necessary part of the resurrection-to-new-life picture. Darkness and death are a precursor to light and life.
What is waiting to die in our own lives so that we may experience new life? Is it fears for the future, anxiety and worry over current circumstances, disorder and distraction that rob us of our joy in the Lord, a controlling spirit that wants to rule either our lives or others, or perhaps a self-reliance and independence that gives no place for God?
The darkness invites us, beckons us. This is where changes, transformation, take place. This is the place of God’s great work. Imagine an embryo forming in the womb, a caterpillar transforming in a cocoon, Jonah yielding and prayerful in the whale’s belly. God’s glory places.
What is our dark place like? Our place of surrender, release, repentance, healing and newness. We mostly resist it, yet we always need it. This is an invitation to growth and glory. A call to enter into the dark night, before the majesty of the morning unfolds. Then we emerge reflecting a truer image of ourselves, which is a truer image of Christ. Though our place of struggle and surrender feels lonely, difficult and demanding, the best is always to come.
