THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
Having recently explored the pursuit of happiness in The Divine Mandates, it seemed appropriate to consider several observations by way of further reflection. Initially, "Happiness ranges from contentment to intense joy" (p. 146). As for the former, it recalls sitting on a favorite rock beside the river that flowed near the home in which I was raised. As for the latter, it brings to mind my return from overseas duty during World War II.
"Even so, there is little precise correlation between circumstances and our response to them. So that some are content with little, while others are dissatisfied with much. In fact, the more we have, the more we seem to want." While circumstances may play a critical role in the pursuit of happiness, our response to circumstances can be a more significant factor.
Illustrations proliferate. A son and daughter were raised by very caring parents. However, the son chose to ignore the counsel of his parents, and happiness escaped him. Conversely, the daughter welcomed the guidance of her parents, and felt blessed. I had not seen her for several years when she, her husband and children visited us. They seemed contented, bordering on intense joy.
"Happiness may emerge from a variety of pleasant experiences. Such as when watching a sunset, enjoying a tasty meal, or animated discussion. Sometimes as a result of a long awaited vacation. Sometimes when quite unexpected." So that while we may pursue happiness by scheduling pleasant events, other instances emerge without explicit preparation. Even so, we can be disposed to experience happiness, or not so inclined.
"We are not endowed with happiness per se, but its pursuit. Which would suggest that happiness can be allusive, fleeting, and transitory. Resulting in part from various conditions that are implicated. Such as that which pertains to our health, companions, or whether there are distractions." So that we should bear in mind that we pursue happiness in context of our social relationships. Consequently, what we do or fail to do for others has a bearing on our quest for happiness.
"The term blessed serves as a near equivalent. However, the accent seems to be more on the actual situation than one’s subjective perception of it. As aptly observed, ‘Appearances can be deceiving.’" For instance, "Now then, my sons, listen to me; blessed are those who keep my ways. Listen to my instructions and be wise; do not ignore it" (Prov. 8:32-33).
"Which brings to mind the cast in wisdom literature. The wise welcomes instruction, with understanding, gains insight, with insight, skill in living; with skill, the ability to plan ahead; with all, to cultivate a righteous life. In keeping with God’s gracious purposes" (pp. 146-147).
"Conversely, the fool resists instruction; otherwise put, is obstinate; as the saying goes: ‘resembles an accident waiting to happen.’ As such, a menace to self and one’s associates. Thus (inviting) God’s deserving displeasure."
The scoffer more resembles the fool. "Not only does he or she dislike correction, but holds the truth up to ridicule." While "the sluggard is reluctant to engage in constructive activity. If initiated, he or she is reticent to carry it through to a successful conclusion. And may be characterized from time to time as restless, helpless, useless, and exasperating."
"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (Prov. 17:17). "Fair weather or the converse. A friend is also candid, accepting, reassuring, and tactful." Finally, "The simple person is as yet uninformed. Such as are in need of a worthy mentor. Otherwise, they will continue to flounder."
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline" (Prov. 1:7). Reverence God, and with life in proper perspective, be blessed in the pursuit of happiness. Otherwise, fall tragically short of its quest.
