FACING THE GIANT SHARK
By R.H.Sutter
The 10-year-old boy’s heart beat rapidly, sweat covered his forehead as he cautiously looked over the edge of the garage roof. While down below the old wrecked car looked menacing, up here it was terrifying. It wasn’t all the missing parts and the rust, it was the windshield. The windshield had a unique pattern of broken glass that was jagged and razor sharp with a “tooth like” shape – it looked like the mouth of a giant shark.
He had observed the older boys jumping from the garage roof onto the wreck and with their longer legs and added muscle their leaps had cleared the windshield. They made it look so easy, but looking down from the top of the garage, with the possibility of going through that windshield, he trembled.
Maybe today wasn’t the day, maybe in a few more years. Suddenly his older brother and Pete McCory appeared on the roof. Now if he didn’t jump everyone would hear that he was a coward.
A coward or a fool, which would it be? In midair, he realized his legs had decided. With the extra kick from anxiety, his leap carried him over the windshield onto the old rusty roof which gave under his weight and flipped him onto the trunk where he slid effortlessly to the ground.
This was not the last shark (TEST) that I faced. When younger I viewed tests as a major, unwelcome disruption. During tests I wondered if God really cared about me – why would He allow me to suffer like this – had I committed some great sin?
As I grew older, I began to see the hand of God in the tests. The tests weren’t always about sin, but rather to mold and develop the “right” I was doing for His Kingdom. That I was valued and loved was evidenced by the time He took to develop a plan just for me. He showed His love and training in the variety of tests to which He exposed me. My role was to trust and love Him, tolerate my emotions during the test, and look beyond the pain (which was difficult).
If you are in the midst of a test today, picture God’s hands below you.
1 Peter 5:7 says “Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately…”
