My wife was looking for something to drink, so I told her I had seen a Sprite in the refrigerator. “But that one has been opened, ” she informed me, ” I want one with some fizz in it!” It occurs to me that relationships can be like that partially consumed Sprite in our refrigerator, if they are not kept current, especially our relationships with the Lord or with spouses. We have to hang out together regularly to know at least a little of what’s going on with each other. Relationships need recurrent updating to maintain their “fizz” or their liveliness, lest they grow stale or flat like that Sprite in the opened can. We can only sustain ourselves but so long on the strength of what was opened up and shared in the past. When a relationship is lively new things are being opened in it because we are opening up to one another. In our relationships with the Lord we are sharing our thoughts and pouring our hearts and hurts to Him, and then opening our hearts and minds for what He has to impart.
I might say I know someone that I haven't communicated with in months or even years. Technically I am correct in saying that because we have been introduced and we recognize each other's names, and maybe once upon a time we were current on some of the events and concerns in each other's lives but that kind of awareness has since lapsed. Those relationships have not been maintained, they are not fresh and vital to the lives we now live. Perhaps it was to such acquaintances that Jesus said to depart because he did not really know them. God forbid that our relationships with Him ever be reduced to that or ever amount to no more than that, though we prophesy or pray or perform wonders in His name. (Matthew 7, v.22,Matthew 25, v.12)
