SONG BIRDS
Freelance writer Lupie Riley
Thought: This is for all you bird lovers out there. Wen and I are fortunate enough to be able to leave our bedroom window open in the summer months only to be awakened in the morning to a choir of at least 5 different species of birds heralding in the new day. Each one having a different melody that our Creator has placed in their tiny throats. The number of bird species alone is phenominal. Many of these varieties are mentioned in the Bible and the following have special meaning.
The Raven was the first bird Noah released from the Ark. His Word also mentions us as rising up on wings of an Eagle . We shall run and not be afraid, walk and not faint, an illustration of how God will protect his children under the shelter of his wings. We have the sparrow that cannot fall to the ground without God noticing. How more important are we to him then the sparrow. Turtle Dove’s were offered in the early sacrificial rituals for the forgiveness of sin. God provided yet another bird, the quail, for the Israelites that had come out of Egyptian bondage and grumbled about the manna they had to eat every day. They had not yet learned to trust and obey and be content with what they had so God sent them a plague that followed, probably a disease carried by the quail. Other birds mentioned are the owl’s, pigeon’s, swallow’s, stork’s, crane’s, hawk’s, partridges, ostriches and chickens. But theirs a special one with deeper meaning.
The Dove was the most prized because it rested upon Jesus at his baptism as a sign from God that Jesus was the one who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. It also embodied the triun God who revealed himself in the form of a Dove. John the baptist was from the tribe of Levi, a direct descendant of Aaron, the priestly line of John's parents. The duties of the priests were to present the sacrifices to the Lord. Jesus was seen as the ultimate sacrafice for sin. John declared “look, the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29). God still reveals himself through his Son and all who believe and put their faith in Jesus will be forgiven and have eternal life in heaven. Maranatha
Prayer: Father God, thank you for these sweet, feathery creatures that give us so much joy but most of all thank you for your son Jesus, our Savior that gives us forgiveness and eternal life as a gift. Amen
Verse: Math. 6:25-27 “ So my counsel is: Don’t worry about things—food, drink and clothes. For you already have life and a body—and they are far more important than what to eat and wear. Look at the birds! They don’t worry about what to eat—they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food—for your heavenly Father feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Will all your worries add a single moment to your life?”
