Tranquillity amidst Turmoil
‘When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.’ Mark 6: 54-55 (NRSV)
They were hurried and harried; a frantic rush of people trying to jostle their way to Jesus. He however, was all tranquillity. A non-anxious presence in the midst of an eager, anxious crowd. Perhaps wherever Jesus went, as more and more heard of his miracles, the pace around him increased. But as the external rush gathered momentum, Jesus’ inner world remained the same – tranquil despite the turmoil.
The Saviour, so deeply connected to his Father, stayed in control, in charge and inwardly peaceful. Fractured and fractious people demanded of Jesus, vying for his attention. However, his spirit was not to be made turbulent by their turbulence. Such is the reward of resting securely in the Father’s provision and love.
Isn’t it difficult to be full of peace when life is rushing at us from all directions? How do we remain steady when life circumstances are being pummelled at us?
Come, let’s step aside for a moment. Breathe deep and thank Jesus that he is here right now, and that he is great enough to help us. Be still and surrender ourselves and circumstances to him. Know that the God of all is in control. Say that aloud. Believe that he can help us regardless of the need. He will not pass us by. He has given us everything this day for life and victorious living. Now let’s thank him, for God delights in the praises of his people.
