At daybreak, the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.” Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, and if I asked you, you would not answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.” They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?” He replied, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.” Luke 22:66-71 NIV
Notice that even though the chief priests and teachers of the law directly asked Jesus if He was the Son of God, He would not tell them He was as such. He did not tell them because they would not have believed Him. All He said to them was “You say that I am.” So, because they asked Him if He was the Son of God, they used that as the “evidence” to convict Him and sentence Him. Jesus was convicted for that which is the truth.
All these people wanted to do is get Jesus by Himself, with none of His followers nor a crowd around, so that they could condemn Him.
Jesus speaks to all who will listen. He lets us know that He truly is the Son of God. He is our salvation and our redemption. Through Him we receive all that we need to carry out the work He gives to us. We must let others know that Christ is the only true way to salvation. Let us stand beside the Lord, and let others know that He truly is the Son of God.
