While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.” Luke 20:45-47 NIV
Jesus did not hesitate to unmask that which was veiled by others. The teachers of the law were haughty and self-seeking. They wished to be noticed and recognized, by wearing long flowing robes and having the seats of most importance in the synagogues. I am sure they spent time “policing” the actions of people rather than educating them properly in the laws which truly needed to be obeyed. Jesus condemned their actions. He wanted to warn them that their actions were disdained by God.
Jesus taught righteously about following the commands, the laws of God. He could have reprimanded all of us on what we do wrong, but that He did not do. Christ came to serve, rather than to be served (like the teachers of the law).
Through the Spirit of Truth, any actions of ours which need unmasking for their true intent will be brought to our attention. It is better to be reprimanded by our Lord, than to face eternal punishment for deliberately continuing in sinful ways. We must be repentant when our actions do not align with God’s ways. The Father treats us as His children. If a child disobeys what the parents deems appropriate behavior, reprimanding comes forth. The same happens with God. Accept it as the Father lovingly steering you back on the right path.
