Memories on a Rainy Day
The clouds roll in and out, sometimes rendering my memories dark and dismal; sometimes bright, and filled with sunflower days. I don’t like the black ones. They bring pain, rains of tears and sometimes even regret. I try to avoid them, but I’ve finally learned to deal with them in a healthy way, realizing they are all but clouds, after all. They’ll go away.
Lessons learned from difficult times return to their storage place (labeled “Open Only if Necessary)—in another area of my mind. That helps, and for the most part, I am the keeper of the keys, so to speak, although occasionally those memories escape and roll over me, creating a cloud of loneliness, sadness or longing.
How blessed I have been this week to enjoy those sunflower days of happy memories as I sifted through treasures from my life that I had stored in boxes for eight years in my son’s garage. Even though it was raining outside and the heavens seemed to display impenetrable clouds of grey, my days were bright. Memories can do that, too.
Mementoes of my child-rearing days made me happy: 30 chocolate molds brought back a remembrance of squeals of happiness from four children whose stockings or Easter baskets were filled with molded and handmade or dipped chocolates in a array of colors made especially for them by Mom; birthday and anniversary cards between my parents covering their 41 years of marriage; in that same box was every line and every scrap of paper referenced as I wrote my first book (it was filled with tears, yet overflowing with evidence of God’s goodness and mercy to us during those sad days of illness); a faded Tom Thumb cash register my brother and I shared as kids that still dings when the drawer opens; a beautiful hand-painted plate that hung on my grandmother’s bedroom wall.
I remember when she got older; she once asked me if there was anything of hers that I would like. It was hard to do, but I finally mentioned the “scalloped pink and white plate with the roses” that I had always admired. After her death, I was given the plate by my aunt and on the back was a tiny white sticker with my name on it.
It was a grand day for memories!
Memories are good; they’re times that I’ve tasted;
They’re times that I’ve loved and times that I’ve wasted.
Mother’s Days coming’ it’s coming this Sunday;
I’ll have mem’ries to add when I awaken on Monday.
They may not be perfect, such as seen on a card;
I’ve marked my calendar; the date will be starred.
This is my life and mem’ries abound; those that I’ve written one day will be found.
My offspring will read them; I know they will smile.
As they travel the lane of memories a while.
