Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.” Luke 17:20-21 NIV
Often, we look for events or a stipulated date in time to signify the coming of an event. This can be quite narrow minded. What Christ is telling us here is that the kingdom of God is not an event, but an occurrence. The kingdom of God is in our midst, or within us.
Here are three thoughts as to what Jesus meant in this passage. One, the kingdom of God, in the form of Jesus Christ, is in our midst. Jesus came from the Father and thus is the kingdom in our midst. Jesus is the kingdom and He came to live among us as man. Secondly, the kingdom of God is within our reach. It depends on our heart and what we do with knowing that the kingdom is within our reach. Do we strive for it, or do we just ignore it or even reject its closeness to us? Finally, the kingdom of God is within our heart. The kingdom of God, again, is not an event, but an existence. God’s kingdom resides in the heart of the believer. That is why the believer works for the advancement of God’s kingdom, because, the kingdom is already residing in the heart of the believer.
If you are Christ’s follower, then you already have the kingdom of God in your midst. The kingdom resides in your heart!
