Have you ever met anyone that you felt was constantly judgmental? Did you enjoy talking with that person, or being around them? You most likely do not. Most people take a more defensive posture against those that they consider judgmental over any other personality type. Here’s why:
1.) Being judgmental often means forming a conclusion about a person without many facts. Such facts can sometimes be gathered from unreliable sources, such as “he said she said conversation”, social media, etc.
2.) When such conclusions are formed, they can more or less, become etched in the stone of one’s opinion. This allows no opportunity for a person to change for the better, in their eyes.
A judgmental point of view only produces negative results, yet we do it often…many times in the form of gossip! Luke 6:37 tells us “Judge not and you will not be judged, condemn not and you won’t be condemned”. Then it goes on to say in vs. 38 “give and it shall be given unto you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, shall men give unto your bosom”. Many people use this scripture in relation to tithes and offerings, which I believe it certainly can be, as the laws of sowing and reaping certainly can apply to finances. However, as it relates to context, I believe this scripture is more so speaking of giving mercy, and mercy will be given to you! The Bible takes it a step further, however. In I Corinthians 11:31, the word tells us in the New American Standard version that if we judge ourselves “rightly”, then we will not be judged. The only person you are responsible for judging is YOU! And judging yourself rightly means that your judgment must be based on the highest of standards: The Word. If you do that, even God won’t judge you with the world! That is hard for some people to swallow, but that’s what God has promised us!
Why are we so quick to judge people? Because it takes the focus off of us, and our own shortcomings. Plus it is easier to blame others when things go bad in life. But if we are to handle things the right way, we will be so focused on self evaluation and obedience that we won’t have time to judge other people. Imagine a world where people did this! Let it begin with you.
