How far Moses had ventured in the Old Testament book of Exodus in the third chapter when he happened upon the burning bush at Mount Horeb! (Mount Sinai where he later received the commandments) Some forty years earlier in Egypt he would not have hesitated to believe that he could be the chosen instrument to deliver his people from the cruel oppression under Pharaoh. But now as a father himself ( his son was named Gershom which means “stranger there” which is exactly what Moses had been all these years in Midian and what his people had been for even longer in Egypt) and a shepherd of his father in law’s sheep on the back side of the desert , he responds in a completely different manner to the lofty idea of being a deliverer, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” His very sense that in himself he was incapable of such a daunting task is a key part of what qualified him in Yahweh’s eyes, because Yahweh knew that Moses would now look to Him for the strength and ability, having been broken over those forty years of his confidence in his own strength and abilities. Those years of inner dealings in the Midian desert had drained away his natural self confidence and left him in a place of humility and meekness where he would begin to put his entire confidence in God. "Now the Moses was the meekest man on the face of the earth," it says parenthetically in Numbers chapter 12 verse 3. And meekness has been described as an attitude that deems all the dealings of God as good. It has also been described as state of having been worn down by the processes of life. Both of these descriptions could accurately be applied to Moses.
The whole process of these dealings covers only about 25 verses from third chapter to the fourth in the book of Exodus, but it is such a crucial inward and outward journey that without it there would never have been a deliverer named Moses, or a fledgling nation called Israel, or a Messiah arising from it to be our Savior and Deliverer one day!
