It was the first time he noticed the Rabbi’s 3 strings of grey hair, beginning at this temple like a light dust of snow. As His head bobbed to capture the grains of sand captured between his toes. I feel so uncomfortable, he thought. So great a man who would deign to humble Himself in such a manner. He sometimes felt annoyed to dust his own feet after removing his sandals at the end of a long days following the Master.
The water sloshed again the side of the bowl as He dropped the cloth into it again. The silence is the room was so loud, filled with wonderment, awe and almost shame. But the Lord insisted that we allow Him this simple but meek task in order to teach each of them. The same lowliness and selflessness should we lavished upon the sheep. He said that the sick, broken, lame, blind, the untouched, the widows, harlots, tax collectors, Pharisees and Sadducees, demon possessed, bitter and desperate who long to be near Him. They pushed their way through the throng just for a chance to touch the Master. We ought not to marvel at their sin as though we are superior, but we must remember this moment. Thomas’ mind flashed back at the woman with the issue of blood. She dares! With such boldness this unclean one, He had thought. This woman ignored the law and walked about in her downcast state! She should instead be hiding in the deep recesses of her abode, but she made herself as a man, a Jewish man and dared to contact Messiah. But He stopped for her. At first she hid her face, then bowed before the Master. In a fleeting moment, something had changed. The hunch of her back seemed straighter, her eyes grew clearer as she met His gaze. She knew she had been healed….
Plop.
Splash.
The sand beneath them grew dark from the water as it slid down the sides of the bowl. He patiently cast off the sand, poured out the brown liquid, and filled the bowl again with fresh water.
Jesus continued to work in silence. His followers sitting Shiva as their pride passed away with each stroke of His hands. A bead a sweat dropped from His forehead into the small puddle now formed around the clay vessel.
This day, they would always remember. One in which the Master became as a servant, in order to lead.
John 13: 1-14
