“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.” (Psalm 40:1-3 NRSV)
Patience is a must in Christian life. Without this quality, no one can live a victorious and fruitful Christian life. What God desires from His children is to wait patiently for His intervention in their lives. But it is the character of man to expect immediate results. People hardly like to wait. They cannot, even if for one hour. But God’s rules are unique and different from the normal human ways. Let us understand here that God’s commands have a purpose much greater than ours. By desiring to get things done quickly, we may want to live a smooth life. But by desiring patience from us, God wants to give us a strong foundation. People barely accept the fact that man can grow spiritually as well as physically only by practicing patience. Have you seen any child becoming mature in an instant? Or have you noticed anyone becoming successful immediately? Does not it take time for every littlest details in life to improve and increase? God, the Creator and Designer of everything, has included the truth that nothing can be done or achieved without patience.
But man cannot, I admit, cultivate patience by his own limited capacity. The time we start to develop this inward quality without the grace and strength of God, we fail miserably. Patience takes time to develop. You cannot get this quality of patience in an instant. In the beginning, you may have the patience for waiting only for one month, but as time proceeds, and if you hold on a little more strongly, you will be able to wait for one year. Patience grows. Patience grows slowly. The gradual progress of everything in life denotes how important it is to never give up no matter what happens. If you are able to wait for a longer period and are willing to never give up, you will achieve success in all your endeavors.
Never give up; Never ever give up!
That’s because something good is waiting for you. God has generously prepared much greater things for you! If you wait patiently, you will be strengthened daily in your walk with God. Patience does not make us tired or bored. There is a deep empowerment when we wait for the Lord’s doing. The time we surrender and start to wait, God brings into our hearts the desire and capacity to develop patience. But where does patience come from? It comes from the assurance and confidence that we do not need to be in a hurry because God does everything in the correct time. We need only to wait and watch.
The Israelites in the Old Testament times were a great example of impatience. Impatience destroys everything. The quality of anything is determined by the duration of patience that it took to develop. In other words, you cannot fulfill anything until you wait. Wait is not waste.
“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfast. You have heard of the steadfastness of Job, and you have seen the purpose of the Lord, how the Lord is compassionate and merciful.” (James 5:7-11 ESV)
I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry: Notice the words “waited patiently”. The Psalmist King David was not obviously a man without responsibilities. Being a king, he had multiple things to take care of; there was no time for him to waste away. Even then, he waited, he waited patiently. Now let us look into ourselves. Do we have such a spiritual relationship with God? We have time to crack jokes, sit before the television, read the newspaper, spend time in WhatsApp and Facebook; but we don’t have time to sit in the Lord’s presence and wait patiently for Him. The king did not wait patiently for any worldly thing, but he waited patiently for the Lord. There is no doubt he got his strength and guidance each day because he practiced this habit daily. Had he not done so, he would never have been a powerful and influential person in history. This inspires us to do the same so that we too can be blessed abundantly by God.
Now notice the words “he inclined to me and heard my cry”. How much did David wait? Well, we don’t know. But it is certain that, it must not have been a short time; because the phrase “waited patiently” affirms this. Does anyone have to wait patiently for a short span of time? God inclined to him who being a responsible king waited patiently for the Lord. God heard the cry of him, who being a king, took time enough to wait patiently for the Lord. How many times we get angry and upset with God because He does not give us sudden answers to our prayers! Who are we to determine His ordained time of working wonders? We can tell God what we need. But we cannot tell God when to give us what we need. In His appropriate and perfect time, He will provide us the answers to our prayers.
Friend, is your life similar with the message revealed through this article? Do you wait patiently for the Lord? Or are you a very busy person? Do you want everything to be done and achieved in a hurry? Or do you know that God is controlling every details of your life? Do you have the confidence and confirmation in your hearts that God does everything beautiful in His time? We will get nothing by hurrying. Patience is the key to fulfillment and success. We are designed to live a life for the glory of God. God is glorified only when everything in our life happens according to His will and schedule. Our plans and timing may prove to be incorrect. But God’s plans and timing are always perfect. Our waiting patiently will surely be rewarded.
