‘Wait, I am coming back,’ Joshua yelled as he entered the taxi. As the taxi sped off, he sent a text to his mother. ‘But I may not come back soon. If you are still alive, I am glad and if you are dead, I won’t miss you. Don’t cry. Let me go out at least and see the world you have protected me from all these years.’
Betty is a single Christian mother with a son. She had been raped by a group of three young boys in secondary school when she was 14. That event weakened her so much that her Christian parents could not believe their daughter who was active at Sunday school and teenagers’ bible class could be the next rape victim in the neighbourhood. She could not convince anyone that she never joined bad company in school but was just an unfortunate target for the boys.
Six weeks after being raped with no one believing her side of the story, her parents sent her to her uncle in Lagos at least to remove the shame their daughter had brought upon them. Unknown to Betty and her parents she was pregnant with Joshua. And her leaving Ibadan was a defining moment in her life.
At the park the day she left Ibadan she begged her mother to believe her that she was not living a fake life but still a Christian professing Christ.
‘Lord Jesus, you know how much I love you and obey your words. While this world is still corrupt, your Grace still keeps me going. Why would you allow all these happen to me? Jesus, I have preached your words to people so they know the truth in you, but why am I forsaken?’ Betty prayed as she journeyed to Lagos.
The same week Betty started living with uncle Lanre, she started showing signs of pregnancy. Lanre and her parents agreed to abort the baby but Betty denied saying she had a dream she was going to die.
‘If you cannot abort the baby, you are leaving my house,’ Lanre shouted.
‘If you want the pregnancy just don’t return home,’ Betty's mother said in anger.
‘Shameless girl! After all we did for you by teaching you the things of God, you went out sleeping with three boys and claimed they raped you when in fact you walked in their path,’ Betty's father said angrily.
Betty left his uncle’s house for the street.
She stayed in a white garment church for one year sleeping on bench and mat and eating only what is given to her. Her only job was sweeping the church, fetching water for the prophet’s family and joining in prayers every night at the church auditorium until she gave birth to Joshua. After giving birth, she lived in the church for another six years.
Betty parents and uncle never bothered finding her. She was lonely but still had faith in God and never disobeyed God. The brilliant young girl could no longer continue her education but focus on her son because she had very little support which was only from the church, mainly shelter and food.
Betty had gained skill in cake making and had saved money to rent a room within the church neighbourhood. After moving out of the church, she raised her child, teaching him things of God and always praying with him. Until one Thursday when Joshua, 17, said he was leaving home to make money by all means because his mates in school were from richer homes.
That was another devastating moment for Betty. She had told her son that he had no father because she was not sure whom actually impregnated her of the three boys.
‘So I am a bastard?’ Joshua had asked in anger when he was 11.
‘God is your father and will always be. Our life story is quite exceptional but we are going to end in great joy,’ Betty had told her son.
As she watched her son leave that Thursday having read his text, she became angry in her spirit and went into her room to pray.
‘Jesus, I have endured all these years only with you on my side. I have lost all just for your sake. I have been faithful and honest only with you because I know only you can help. Lord Jesus, I can’t afford losing my son, because he is the reason I have lost everything. Heaven, I pray, bring him back now. Turn his heart now, and show yourself. Let him not taste the world before he is returned home. Your love is far better than the riches of this world. Let the hands of the enemy over him be taken away. Return him to your love. Make the miracle, I can’t do this alone.’
As Betty was praying, her phone rang. It was an older woman on the other end who informed her that her son was involved in a car accident and currently at Nicholas hospital. She began crying but kept her faith knowing that nothing bad was going to happen to her son.
In 36 minutes, Betty was at the hospital only to find the shocker of her life. The woman who called her was her mother who had helped the boy involved in the accident. The doctor treating Joshua was one of the boys that had raped her more than 18 years before, and her son had no injury, but was only in shock.
‘Betty, for 15 years I and your father have been looking you and asking God to forgive us,’ her mother said.
‘Every day of my life, I regret my action,’ Dr Seun cried.
‘This boy is actually the baby I got after I was raped’ Betty said crying.
Dr Seun begged Betty to perform a paternity test on Joshua as he had not had a successful marriage and all his attempts at having a child have been unsuccessful.
‘At the moment I do not have a wife. She left me recently,’ Dr Seun said.
Betty went on her knees.
‘God, I thank you for the miracles. God I thank you for always forgiving us. God I am so grateful. You are never late.’
Joshua is Dr Seun's son, as paternity result showed it and he took Betty as his wife.
Betty forgave them all.
‘If not for God on my side, I wouldn’t have been here today, and I am stronger in faith. God is never late.’
