Leadership
Any man or woman in the marketplace must wonder, “What did Daniel do to so impress his boss?” Let’s take a look at the process that Daniel had to go through so that you are able to see that in this present day that you are not exempt from the scrutiny and the sabotage of others as you walk towards your appointed authority of greatness.
In Daniel Chapter 6, we see the transfer of power from King Belshazzar to King Darius his new leader. This is what we can call a hostile takeover. What we have to remember is that the new King is a pagan who is not concerned about Daniel’s worship or the God that he serves. This is a prime example for those of us who work in the marketplace. The majority of workplaces will be as such. It will never be about your faith but about the quality of work that you do and your attitude towards the organization. King Darius had no toleration for fools or incompetency. King Darius was the second most powerful man in the world. Before Daniel was promoted, his colleagues meticulously investigated Daniel’s life to find an ought against him. This was not a normal employee type investigation to check his references and background but it was a devised plot to disqualify him.
Daniel 6:1-6 1) It pleased Darius to set over the kingdom an hundred and twenty princes, which should be over the whole kingdom;2)And over these three presidents; of whom Daniel was first: that the princes might give accounts unto them, and the king should have no damage.3) Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm.4) Then the presidents and princes sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom; but they could find none occasion nor fault; forasmuch as he was faithful, neither was there any error or fault found in him.5) Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God.6)Then these presidents and princes assembled together to the king, and said thus unto him, King Darius, live forever.
Always remember that favor and a spirit of excellence attracts the Adversary of your soul. At the end of the day what his conspirators discovered were the two reasons Darius the King was so impressed with Daniel which led to his promotion:
1) He had a spirit of excellence (Daniel 6:3 KJV). 3 Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him; and the king thought to set him over the whole realm. This translates into having a spirit of excellence in all that he did in the workplace. He was an excellent employee and employer. To be excellent means that your work stands above others. It also shows that Daniel habitually showcased excellence in all that he did. He also required those around him to strive for excellence. A person with a spirit of excellence is very hard to find now days. Most people quickly conform to the norm of mediocre within 6 months or less after entering a new work assignment (job).
Excellence sometimes means that you cannot confirm to the regular flow of your colleagues. This is a rare person indeed in the workplace. Proverbs 22:29 says “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.”
Daniel’s spirit of excellence was also seen in his attitude. Like his skills his attitude at work was noticed by others. The King knew how Daniel responded to his new responsibilities and rewarded him by making him the second most powerful man in the kingdom.
Just like some of us, Daniel was in a high pressured situation in his workplace. God gives us Daniel’s example to remove every excuse that we could imagine to let us know that we can overcome our adversities. When we think about Daniels work environment I guess we can consider ourselves fortunate. Daniel saw challenges as opportunities and that is what rendered him the title as “distinguished”.
2. He was ethical in his business dealings (6:4) As you read Daniel 6:4 you see that his enemies could not find fault in his business dealings which causes us to note that he completed his work and it was in order.
If you are a Christian whose work is less than excellent, who is always preaching and not completing your work then it is hard to listen to anything you would have to say. If you are a Christian whose standards are that of lateness and your dress code is shoddy it will be hard to listen to you as well. If you are a Christian who entertains drinking, happy hour and office gossip you then become one hard to listen to. Your standards are always measured by your daily habits. Who you are will show up in your sphere of influence at some time or another.
I have had the honor and favor of God to meet with and minister to people who I have always admired from afar and God so wonderfully led them to me to speak into their lives. Today I am a spiritual and business adviser to many in the government, ministry and now the arts & entertainment arena.
These people were not attracted to me because they knew of my ministry, that I worked in the Executive Office of Government or that I am a conference speaker. Each person that I advised met me through divine encounters that God set up through my extension of compassion and excellence. They later found out my background.
Your daily habits will show up in your routines of life!
