There are many ways we visualize for the correction of our Nation's ills: the correct President and other elected officials, new laws that hold the line on certain problems, the revocation of old laws to give liberty to the people's choices, some good and some bad.
However, the problem grows and is seemingly worsened day by day. There is an air of desperation that surrounds us all and yet we are summarily resistant to the one thing that would bring order to our society and to us personally.
Yes, it is that 'thing' we would rather not resort to doing, but it is the sure cure.
Voices of objection rise in high decibels, "That would interfere with our Nation's Freedom of Religious Expression."
NO. In fact it does not interfere with religious freedom because activating the cure is directed to those whose faith is already placed in the Source of the cure.
"IF My people," not those who do not believe in Me, but "MY People."
IF My people, who are called by My Name, WILL: 1. humble themselves, 2. and pray, 3. and seek My face, 4. and turn from their wicked ways, THEN will I hear from Heaven and come and heal their land." 2 Chronicles 7: 14
Wow! A sure cure and we find it hard to swallow. Is it because the pill is so huge it won't go down our throats?
To be honest, it is because we do not want to give up some things in our lives that God calls sin; we enjoy those things, or demand the right to those practices, and we are unwilling to give them up.
Some Nation's have been willing to turn away from the wicked practices of their cultures and have averted the destruction that God warned was coming because of the wicked practices, Nineveh was one of them.
Paul tells us in Romans 15: 4 "For everything that was written in the past, (speaking of the Old Testament writings,) was written to teach us..."
We get to know God better when we read the Old Testament and learn how God deals with people.
Some will say that the God of the Old Testament was harsh and fearsome, but if they say that they have not really read the Old Testament; the mercy and love of God toward people who repent and turn from their wickedness is a repeated occurrence throughout the Old Testament Scriptures.
One such was Nineveh. God's Prophet, Jonah, after great and uncomfortable encouragement from God, went across Nineveh warning of coming judgment.
The people, to include the King, believed the message and even draped their animals as well as every person in the Nation in sack cloth and ashes, a sign of repentance and humility before God, and they stopped their evil practices. Jonah 3:10
In response, God changed His mind and did not destroy them, instead they were blessed.
We, as modern people of God, are often unable to accept that God punishes at all, anything, and that includes us in our sins. That is totally not Scriptural! Hebrews 12: 6
"God is Love" I John 4: 8
Because we are not learned in the Scriptures we think there is conflict between Hebrews 12: 6 and 1 John 4: 8.
C. S. Lewis, in one of his essays talks about the Great Cosmic Surgeon. He presents an analogy of a modern surgeon who, in an effort to save a life, cuts deeply into the body tissues to excise a cancer, and not only does the surgeon go deeper than the cancers location but also wider all around the cancer taking also some healthy tissue in order to be certain to have removed every trace of the disease, and yet we do not call the surgeon unkind, but rather diligent and caring.
When God punishes or allows punishment for sin that we refuse to stop doing, it is an act of love. He wants a relationship with us and because He is Holy and cannot look upon sin He deals with our sin so that we may live. God knows that sin will destroy us.
May it be true that we, as a Nation and as individuals, agree with God; call every action sin that God calls sin; humble ourselves and pray, seek His face, getting to know Him, and turn from those practices that He Names as sin, and be healed.
