Rick and Mari made phone calls to their banks for weeks, trying to get the bankers to change their minds about loaning them money, but because they did not have jobs, the bankers were afraid they would not be able to pay them back, so they declined.
One evening after dinner, as Ashlyn was upstairs in her room doing her homework, Rick was watching the news. He heard one news report about a children who were taken out of their home and given to someone else, because their parents had been laid off from their last jobs and had not been able to find work for a long time. Rick turned the TV off and sighed. "Please, God, don't let me need to give Ashlyn up," he prayed. Immediately he heard God and felt Him speak to his heart: "Don't worry, Rick, you won't have to. You'll find work." Great relief swept over Rick's heart, and he whispered, "Thank You, God."
Ashlyn finished her homework and came downstairs. Her dad had told her she could watch TV once her homework was done. She climbed into Rick's lap and said, "Daddy, I finished my homework. Can I watch TV now?"
Rick smiled, hugged her, and said, "Yes, honey, you can watch TV. I just needed to turn off the news to pray for a minute."
"What were you praying about?" Ashlyn asked.
Rick didn't want her to know he'd been afraid of needing to give her up. That would only upset her. He just kissed the top of his daughter's head and rested his chin in her hair. "I was asking God to give me work, basically."
"He will," Ashlyn said.
Rick hugged Ashlyn again and said, "I know."
"Maybe you can sell your machines that make lemonade from home. You'd make a lot of money on them. They're really cool, and I bet everybody would want one."
"You know, what, Ashlyn?" Rick said, looking into his daughter's eyes. "I bet you're right. God did give me the talent to invent, and I still have the opportunity to use that, even if I don't have the loan I need to set up the science lab. I can make the money with the machines I sell and pay off the loan. You're a genius. I'll start working on them tonight." He kissed Ashlyn's cheek again.
"And Emmy and her mommy can help us sell them!" Ashlyn added.
"Great idea!" Rick agreed.
Meanwhile, at Mari and Emmy's house, Mari had been praying that she would find work all night so she could get the loan. She did not sleep a wink the night before. The next day she applied for work at other science labs, but when she explained her boss fired her for sharing her Christian faith (Mari was an honest person and not ashamed of the Gospel), they turned her down. As she was sitting on the couch watching TV with Emmy, she fell asleep. Just then the phone rang. Emmy answered it. "Emmy, it's Ashlyn's daddy. Is your mom there?"
"She's sleeping," Emmy said. "Do you want me to wake her up?"
"No, sweetheart, that's OK," Rick said. "When she wakes up, tell her Ashlyn's daddy has a job for her," he added with a grin.
