For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Philippians 2:13 NIV
To look at some Christians it seems as if they are the ones who are doing all the work rather than God. Someone once said, "the trouble with Christians is they are so busy doing, when it's all been done".
On the cross Jesus said, "It is finished" (John 19:30), which means there is nothing we can do to add to our salvation, nothing more for us to do to make us right with God. Not church attendance, not baptism, not good works, Jesus did it all for us. He took our place.
Good works flow from God working in us and if this doesn't happen we shouldn't rush around trying to do good things but rather ask, am I letting God work in me?
We continue the Christian life the same way as we began, trusting in what God has done for us as a free gift to be thankful for, but not something we have to pay back. We are totally acceptable to God at our conversion because of Jesus, and we can never be made more acceptable.
Living the Christian life in our strength is exhausting and frustrating, living the Christian life in God's strength is "righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).
John 15 speaks of abiding in the vine which means allowing God to work in us and through us. We use his energy, not ours, to produce much fruit.
