SEVENTEEN
A SUMMARY OF CHAPTER ONE.
In verses 1-3, the origin, substance, and communication of the Revelation are described. First, it is a revelation which is information previously unknown to men communicated by God. This revelation focuses on the purpose and person of His son Jesus Christ. Revelation is the completion of all Scripture detailing the final events in history leading up to Christ’s return. Jesus began first as the Lamb slain but in Revelation, we find Him victorious as the Lion of Judah
This message was entrusted to John the beloved disciple. He was the last of the apostles and the only one who escaped martyrdom. John had a very close relationship with Jesus and was an eyewitness from the beginning of all that Jesus began to do and to teach up until the time of his resurrection. It is not unreasonable that John was the one that God chose to deliver this message. To strengthen his position, the message was first delivered by angels and later on in the chapter we see the living resurrected Christ in his glorified state giving further strength to John’s ministry.
Can you imagine what it must have been like to be placed on an island, separated by miles of water from his fellow Christians suffering the same type of persecution? John describes himself as a brother and companion in tribulation, describing his love and compassion for his fellow sufferers. The message from Christ was his encouragement and his source of direction for this mission. Christ presence continued to be with him in his remaining time. His mission was to write God’s message to seven literal churches with the intent of preparing them for the future time when they would become the bride of Christ.
Chapter one forms the setting for the messages that would follow. Throughout the remainder of the chapter God has the church in mind as she, in time. will not be seven brides but one perfected bride of Christ.
