Leadership
Proverbs 13:20 - Walk with the wise and be wise.
Proverbs 9:10 states, 'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.' As we mature in faith, we also need to grow in wisdom. Wisdom is not mere accumulation of knowledge and skills. It is more of making right decisions, acting at the right time and doing things according to the principles of our faith. This may not be easy for some who are used to instant gratification and quick results at whatever means.
Christians are admonished to be wise in all our undertakings at all times. Proverbs 13:20 teach us one of the best ways to gain wisdom. We have to look for mentors who can provide us with the correct role models and work with them. Ideally, our parents should be our mentors. As we engage the world, we can look for other mentors in our schools, churches and workplaces. In the process, we will have influencers who will help develop our personality and guide us towards a more meaningful life.
The opposite is disaster. When we hitch our life to unwise mentors, stress and pressure will be the name of the game. I have friend who was diligent and passionate in his work. He joined our small team of consultants and with his experience and skills, he was groomed to be one of the key persons in the team. But after a short stint, he left our group. He walked away citing dissatisfaction with some policies of the team.
Last time I heard, he accepted an offer from a company that gave him a high position and a package of benefits. We knew the company and its head. He was an ill-mannered person who care for results more than the welfare and development of his staff. After some time I learned that my friend was demoted and even reprimanded and insulted in front of other people. For sure, he wanted to get rid of my friend.
In the workplace it is important that the people who supervise us are wise. If we are in a situation where we have a bad boss, we have to look for a mentor within the workplace who can provide us with guidance. If our boss is wise, then we have to rejoice and thank God for the gift of mentoring. We have to maximize learning opportunities and wisdom that we can get from them.
I was blessed with mentors and I thank God for that. My father taught me discipline and respect for others. One of my first supervisors was a friend who encouraged me to always think of the future and hope for the best. I also have a long mentoring relationship with the mayor of the town where I grew up. He worked with the poor and even distributed the land he inherited from his parents to indigenous people. Working with a church-based development organization, my boss was somebody I never saw got angry. He told me the secret, 'when you feel you are getting angry, lower your voice.' I saw him murmuring many times, and yes, those were the times he was angry.
At present i still enjoy the fellowship of friends and influencers, and most of all the Lord, the ultimate Mentor.
