As Mari was driving the girls back to her house from church, Ashlyn said, "Guess what--I just told Jesus I wanted Him to come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior!"
Mari's and Emmy's eyes widened with excitement. "That's wonderful, dear!" Mari exclaimed. "I am so happy for you! And now that you have received Jesus, He is in your heart to stay. Nobody can ever take Him out. You will go to Heaven with Him one day. Do you understand all of that?"
Ashlyn nodded. "I kind of do, but I have so much more to learn. What does it mean when Jesus stays in your heart? I know I believe in Him and am going to Heaven, but what happens next?"
"You pray to Him and read the Bible every day," Emmy told her.
"That's right," Mari said, "and Jesus helps you to love other people the way He wants you to love them and live your life the way He wants you to, and He explains how to do this in His Word, which is the Bible."
"I don't have a Bible," Ashlyn told them. "My daddy doesn't believe in God or reading the Bible or going to church."
"I know, sweetheart. That's why we'll all pray for him. You pray for your father, and don't ever give up," Mari told her.
"I have an old Bible I used to use," Emmy said. "My mommy just got me a new one that I use now. I'll give you my old one if you'd like."
"I sure would!" Ashlyn exclaimed.
Mari took the girls out to lunch, then brought them back to her and Emmy's house so the girls could play before she took Ashlyn home. When she and Emmy took Ashlyn home, Ashlyn had her new Bible in her hand when they got to the front step. When Rick opened the door and saw the Bible, he saw red. "Ashlyn, where did you get that?" he demanded.
"From Emmy, Daddy," Ashlyn said quietly. "I went to church today and received Jesus as my Savior."
Rick stared daggers at Mari. "You took her to church and made her receive Jesus?" he asked angrily.
Mari shook her head. "I only took her to church. I didn't make her go, though. She wanted to go, and she wanted to receive Jesus. Receiving Jesus isn't something anybody can be forced to do. They receive Him by choice."
Rick's eyes narrowed. "Mari, you may be teaching your own daughter to use God as a crutch, but I am trying to raise Ashlyn to believe we are strong and don't need a crutch! And you studied science just like I have, so where do you get the idea that there's a God? Can you prove there's a God?" he asked.
"Can you prove there isn't a God?" Mari asked back. "Can you prove that everything that exists now happened because of something like the Big Bang?"
"Yes, I can!" Rick shouted.
"Oh, really? Well, what caused the Big Bang?" Mari asked.
"Materials colliding in space," Rick answered. "You know that. You studied the Big Bang, too."
"I did, that's true, but I couldn't help but wonder, what caused all of those materials to collide? Surely if it was an accident, something or Someone must have caused the accident. After all, Rick, you have seen small accidents like spilled milk and big accidents like traffic collisions, and someone or something causes those accidents, so accidents have to be caused by someone or something," Mari insisted, "so tell me, what caused all those materials to collide? If materials colliding in space caused it, if you're right and it was all just one big accident, surely Someone or something must have caused it."
Rick was running out of answers and the ability to prove his case, but he wasn't ready to admit that Mari had a point, so he shouted, "I just know it was an accident! Now, if you will do me a favor, Mari, just stay out of our lives! I don't want my daughter going to your house ever again!"
