Divergent Roads Karen Pourbabaee
“Do not conform yourselves to this age, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing, and perfect.” Romans 12:2 NAB
With Lent’s arrival, we contemplate our paths more closely, embarking on an intentional spiritual journey with a choice of roads to follow. Robert Frost shared his road experience poetically: “Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less traveled and it made all the difference.” There’s a road that will make a difference.
Will we take the road called willpower? Giving up chocolate or a favorite TV show? It’s simple, easy to navigate like the open highway with bright lights and road signs. It can be thoughtless, like putting our minds on autopilot. Though reaching our destination, what difference has it made?
There’s another road called willingness…willingness to be transformed. Mysterious, difficult to navigate. Without clear road signs and bright lighting. How do we navigate this mystifying road? Once we’re willing, how do we steer on this road of transformation?
Paul outlines our course in Romans 12:2. The road to transformation begins by renewing our minds. Not by thinking the same way or conforming to the world’s ideologies. Minds are renewed by truth, found in God’s Word. Do you want to be revived and given new spiritual strength? Study God’s Word.
Once our minds are renewed, transformation continues with discernment, meaning to perceive or recognize. It implies keen understanding and insight. What will we be able to discern? The good, pleasing, and perfect will of God!
Will you take the divergent road of willingness? The road less traveled? It will make all the difference!
