When Jesus Christ said in John 10:28 - "I give them eternal life and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand." He meant a permanent Salvation. Jesus is the the Son of God Who is One with the Father and the Spirit. God makes promises and He keeps them, therefore the life Jesus gives us is eternal, it cannot be revoked, lost, or taken away.
"God is not a man that He should lie, not a son of man that He should change His mind, Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19)
"for God's gifts and His call are irrevocable." (Romans 11:29)
God promised Abraham he will be the father of many nations. Today we, and all who believe and put their faith in Christ, are Abraham's seed. We belong to Israel by faith.
"If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise." (Galatians 3:29)
"Because you are sons, God gave the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit Who calls out 'Abba' Father." (Galatians 4:6)
God is faithful. All the He said in His Word is true and He fulfills ALL His promises. We can trust Him to keep His Word because He is God. When we were reborn in the Spirit, God started HIS work in us and He will complete that work.
"being confident of this, that He Who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." (Philippians 1:6)
"May God Himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our LORD Jesus Christ. The One Who calls you is faithful and He will do it."
(1 Thessalonians 5:23-24)
While we may be reborn, we are not yet perfected. God continually works in us to will and to do according to His good purpose.(Philippians 2:13)
If we should fail and fall into sin, we must repent and turn back to God - confess (admit) our sin and turn away from it. Genuine repentance is turning away from sin because it is against God and we obey God because we love Him.
"If we confess our sins to Him, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. " (1 John 1:9)
"The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise." (Psalm 51:17)
"I live in a high and holy place but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite."
(Isaiah 57:15)
Eternal life is eternal, permanent. Jesus Christ said in John 17:3 "Now this is eternal life: that they may know You, the Only True God and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent."
Thus, eternal life is KNOWING God - in the heart, in truth, and in spirit. How do we come to know Him? Again Jesus said in John 17:17 "Sanctify them by Your Word, Your Word is truth."
In John 6:63 Jesus also said "The Spirit gives life, human effort counts for nothing. The WORDS I have spoken to you are Spirit and they are full of Life."
So to live this eternal life God intends for us is to obey Joshua 1:8 - God's command to read and meditate on His Word day and night because it is the TRUTH, it is SPIRIT, and it is LIFE.
Only then can we truly worship our forever God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24) proving that He truly lives in us.
"Those who obey His commands live in Him and He in them."
(1 John 3:24)
