Remembrance: The Essence of Thanksgiving by Karen Pourbabaee
“Go through His open gates with great thanksgiving; enter His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and bless His Name.” Psalm 100:4 Living Bible
The giving of thanks involves grateful acknowledgment of something received. Gratitude expressed. Remembrance must precede thanks and is the essence of the celebration of Thanksgiving as a holiday. Take the time to review the year you’ve just walked through. In quietness, recall His many blessings. Bring to mind the adversities that made you stronger and be grateful for those too. And as you remember, “… greet Him with a song of praise.” Psalm 95:2 NAB
Lord I will not forget Your hand upon my life. I remember and enter Your gates with thanksgiving in my heart.
The courts of the Lord are where His presence resides, and you must enter His courts with praise. Praise Him for His greatness:
“Praise Him for His mighty works. Praise His unequaled greatness.” Psalm 150:2 LB
Praise Him for His goodness:
“How great is Your goodness Lord, stored up for those who fear you.” Psalm 31:20 NAB
Praise Him for His graciousness:
“...gracious and merciful is the Lord.” Psalm 111:4 NAB
Thanksgiving should be more than a time of family gatherings and certainly more than turkey and pumpkin pie. Enjoy the day with the blessings of family and bounty, but take some time to quietly reflect and remember. As the following author states, “Thanksgiving is a time of quiet reflection upon the past and an annual reminder that God has again, been ever so faithful.” Charles Swindoll.
Lord I bow to You in quietness and humbleness. I stop and remember. I walk through Your gates with thanksgiving. I enter Your courts and give You praise for Your greatness, Your goodness, and Your graciousness. I am blessed as I am reminded once again of Your faithfulness. Amen.
