I’ve done a bit of research, and most scientists and astronomers agree that the universe, in which we live, while it could be infinite in size, is at least ninety-one billion light years across. A light year, remember, is the distance light travels through space in one year. If it’s true, and you built a perfect scale model that was the size of a football field, one hundred yards, then each yard in this model would represent nine hundred ten million light years. Light, traveling at over one hundred eighty-six thousand miles per second, would take over two and a half million years just to go one tenth of an inch.
The Milky Way Galaxy, in which we live, contains over a hundred billion stars, one of which is our Sun, and is over one hundred thousand light years across. In our scale model it would have to be so small you wouldn’t be able to see it with the naked eye. Our own Sun, which resides in the outer regions of that galaxy, would be smaller than a single atom, and the earth only a millionth the size of that. Where does that leave us?
In this unimaginable vastness, and smallness, there is a God; because to believe otherwise, for me, would be like going into a house and believing there was never a builder, never a carpenter, never a plumber or electrician; that the paint colors on the walls were just an accident, and no one ever assembled the kitchen appliances I can see. I wouldn’t be up for that task. And if there is a God, who somehow ordained all of this through the laws of nature, do you really think he worries for himself about what we believe? It’s amazing enough that he’s even aware of us, because without that, for him, this would be nothing more than a lifeless meaningless box of sand. And if he’s aware, and if he worries, it’s for our sake, and not because he can’t make it without us.
Life is a gift, beyond what we can imagine. We can choose to ignore it, resent it, or appreciate it. That’s up to us.
The next time you go to a football game or watch one on TV, think about that; and while everyone else in the stands is wondering who is going to win and why, you’ll be pondering something far greater.
Food for thought on a Friday morning.
