Healing
We’re excited about this fourth addition to our publications on how God Personally Speaks to us. In this article, we will explore two more amazing ways that God communicates.
“For You are my rock and my fortress;
For Your name’s sake You will lead me and guide me.”
Psalm 31:3 (NASB)
• God speaks to us through the gut feelings we get.
Ely begins the story.
On a hot, humid, August day in 2010, Joanie and I drove to our local Women’s Center for Joanie’s annual routine mammogram. When we arrived Joanie registered, and we both sat in the waiting area talking and watching TV. We were a little early.
Everything seemed like it always did until the moment the technician came out to call Joanie for her appointment. All of a sudden, I had a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. Something was wrong. This was not going to be a regular mammogram. Of course, I said nothing. I simply smiled warmly and wished Joanie well as she accompanied the technician inside.
The following week, my gut feeling was confirmed. We received a certified letter from the Women’s Center advising us that an abnormality was found on the mammogram and that Joanie needed to see her physician immediately.
Joanie’s physician advised her to have an MRI, followed by a breast biopsy. When both procedures were concluded, a diagnosis of ductal carcinoma in situ was made. Surgery was scheduled at our local hospital’s out-patient facility.
Unfortunately, during the procedure the surgeon discovered a suspicious area slightly beyond the original site and took a biopsy. A second surgery had to be scheduled.
After healing from the surgeries, Joanie was ready to begin a series of 33 radiation treatments.
“…I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,….”
Hebrews 13:5 (NASB)
• God speaks to us through symbolism.
Joanie continues the story.
I was extremely nervous the first day of radiation therapy. I even slipped and fell outside the front door as we were leaving our house. However, reminding myself that God was with me on this journey, I was able to put on a smile and bravely enter the radiation facility. All of the people at the facility were so friendly and caring that I quickly acclimated to the situation.
When one of the technicians called my name, I went into the dressing room and put on a half-gown. Then I was placed on a long table. I’ll never forget the first time I lay on my back waiting for a technician to position me for the treatment and happened to look straight up above my head. On the ceiling was a bright light source shaped in a perfect cross. (John 8:12) I was so overwhelmed that I could barely contain my excitement! The cross, the symbol of what Jesus (Yeshua) went through to ensure eternal life for all of His followers, became the center of my focus. (1 Corinthians 1:18)
Each day I went for radiation, I felt God’s love and knew that He was in the room with me. I began each radiation session by looking up at the cross and feeling the presence of God. It felt like He was actually holding my hand and comforting me.
In speaking through symbolism, God was letting me know that He was there with me every step of the way. God communicates with His believers in ways that He knows will meet their individual needs. He knew that I needed a visual assurance during my radiation treatments to remind me that He was watching over me.
Ely concludes the story.
Everyone at the radiation facility was amazed by Joanie’s positive attitude day in and day out. She always had a bright smile on her face and readily joked with the staff.
This year in 2015, on another hot, humid day in August—on the fifth-year anniversary of Joanie’s breast cancer diagnosis—we made our annual visit to the Women’s Center.
Thanks to God’s goodness and mercy, we are thrilled to report that the radiology findings for Joanie’s mammogram and ultrasound came back negative! In addition, after conducting a follow-up physical exam, Joanie’s surgeon gave her two thumbs up!
Of course, Joanie will need to continue to be vigilant and undergo annual exams and tests. But we will face those procedures together with lighter hearts that are filled with love and gratitude for our Lord and Savior.
Our takeaway from this experience is that God may not prevent us from going through a particular personal trial or tribulation, but He will help us through it!
Joanie and I couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate her important five-year milestone than to share our story. We sincerely hope that it will inspire you to have the courage you need to meet difficult situations in your life.
