Although I'm not proud of most of what is said in this, I call this MY ANGER TESTIMONY, it is written and shared for God's glory and for His purpose's. There is much, much more to my story but this was originally written for a 5 minute church presentation. Please feel free to share it with those you know or especially with those you think it might help. This testimony was given to me to help change lives and let others know there is hope and that there is power in forgiveness. The Bible tells us that God's ways are higher than our ways,,,,He knows the bigger picture of our lives...Jeremiah 29:11 says "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans the prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future"....God is good and greatly to be praised!!!!
I started out in life severely abused, my father was an alcoholic, couldn't hold down a job, watched baseball and beat my mother. If my little sister and I cried out, we would be beaten as well but with a belt. My mother finally had a well deserved nervous breakdown and at the age of 5, I called the operator for an ambulance and the police. I simply told the operator that something was wrong with my mother and gave the operator my address and apartment number. Within five minutes, both the ambulance and police arrived to get my mom. A few days later, after our Dad picked us up after work, we experienced an eviction, our apartment door was all boarded up and we had nowhere to go. My Mom's Pastor took us in for the night and it was shortly thereafter that we found ourselves in Foster Care. All I can say is this, imagine the worst. It was like jumping from the frying pan and into the fire. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse was administered daily and we were told we'd be "dead" if we told anyone. We were terrified!!! After three years, I finally ran away, I was 8 years old. My sister stayed with the abusive Foster Family and I went on to live with a policeman and his family for about a week and a half, then into the a place called the Youth House for a week and a half. I was told I'd only be there for shelter. The Youth House was like jail, but for kids. It had barbed wire across the top of the fence surrounding the courtyard outside and we were monitored by guards inside and out. Then I went to another Foster Home for about a year. After that, I went home with my mother at age 9 and my sister came home shortly thereafter. Mom brought us to church each week and every opportunity she had. I got saved at a revival meeting one night at our church, but was not counseled about what I had done at such a young age or told what to do with my new found faith. So my experience was short lived and only re-awakened some years later. My sister and I being much older, we fought quite often and turned out to be to a handful for my mother so we were off once again to live with other folks. Our Mom sat us down to talk one evening and gave us a choice of living in a reform school or at a place called the Christian Home for Children. I think the reform school chat was designed to steer us in the direction of wanting to go to the Christian Home for Children and it certainly worked. At age 10, we went to the Christian Home for Children (a non-profit organization) in Fort Lee, New Jersey. At one time, it had been an orphanage and now it took in children whose parents struggled with marriage difficulties or illnesses. During the school year, we stayed in the city, but in the summer, we were bused to upstate New York where they had a camp. I loved it, I learned to fish, swim and do other outdoor activities. I loved the country! We were also selected for other camps on occasion, like "Word Of Life" in Skroon Lake, New York, or "Camp Spofford" in Hillsboro, New Hampshire. Both were Christian Camps and I had rededicated my life to the Lord several times, however the commitment just wasn't there. In High School, I got into the wrong crowd, nearly failed 7th grade and went to summer school for 9th grade. I graduated High School in 1976 and upon graduation and I realized I was full of hate and anger for my abusive Foster Family. I contacted my abusive Foster Family by sending them a nice letter along with one of my graduation pictures just to confirm their address, it was burned in my mind. I had a case of stinking thinking. The devil was hard at work keeping the grudge in my heart. Six long months had passed before I got a response and it was a Christmas card, merely signed "The Servideo's". No Love, nothing, I grew more enraged and I wanted them great harm, even to their death. I delighted myself in just thinking about it. I joined the Navy in December 1976. I started writing my former abusers hate mail, (no return address), I reminded them what they did to me and my sister and the rest of the letter consisted of death threats. I actually considered murder and my mind was filled with all kinds of nasty idea's. I sent them this kind of mail from around the world, from every state and country I visited while I was in the Navy, I was filled with great hate, bitterness and anger. I wanted revenge!
I married six years into my Navy career and although my precious wife Brenda knew everything about my childhood, she never expected she'd have to survive my temper. Little did I know at the time that God was going to begin a new work in me and He started to speak to my heart. In a church service, He opened my ears to hear a message about forgiveness and how you could not be forgiven unless you forgive (Matthew 6:15). My mind immediately focused on my abusive Foster Family. Then God and I had a little conversation immediately in that church pew. While thinking of my abusive Foster Family, I asked God, do you want me to forgive them? He said yes. I just had to ask Him again, do you want me to forgive them Lord? He told me clearly and without a doubt - yes, and with tears rolling down my cheeks, I forgave my abusive Foster Family right then and there. But my healing was only just beginning, a visit to my abusive Foster Family's home had to take place. At first I didn't know why. It was only after the visit that my wife and I understood the purpose of the trip. It was so I could confess to writing and sending those terrible letters and to ask for their forgiveness. Strange huh, not the other way around? God is good and greatly to be praised!!!! My wife and kids continued to suffer with my anger, I played the blame game, everyone was wrong except me, my voice would roar and spit would fly out of my mouth. I prayed often and fervently that God would heal me from anger, it was certainly destroying me and all that I loved. Although it consumed me, God continued to work on my heart. Once with my 3 year old son Louis in the car, I heard a message through Christian music on the radio, that Jesus died for me, He died a terrible death for my sins, and how powerful and humbling that was to my soul and I cried uncontrollably. I thought to myself more than once, what a terrible example of a Christian I was. Anyways, I earned two restraining orders from my family, nothing by far that I'm proud of. I don't remember much about the first restraining order, but it was the second restraining order that had a true impact on my heart and mind. A police officer showed up at the door of my house and gave me 30 minutes to evacuate from my home. I found myself running to and from my bedroom dumping my belongings outside. I called in sick from work that day and tried to collect my thoughts. I felt as if this was my last chance, I was losing my family and family was a desire of my heart. I had done nothing but ruin it. I knew what scripture said about anger and the tongue but got nowhere with it. I finally sought help, as I realized I could not do it on my own. A church decided to pay for a 28 week anger management program as long as I completed the course voluntarily. I found good biblical counseling from another church and I found a roof over my head, same as my first restraining order. I was devastated!!!!!! As time passed, I was allowed to go back home and God was healing me from my anger. As I got better, it appeared that those around me were changing, yet it was me who was changing. I came to realize that anger was a choice.
That was fifteen years ago, Brenda, my precious wife would tell you I've been healed. Praise God! I almost didn't see my 20th wedding anniversary. June 5th, 2017 was our 35th and I can't count our blessings. God has given me a strong wife and a forgiving, loving family, a desire of my heart. God has cast my sin as far as the east is from the west.
Through God's grace, mercy and love, He restored me.
As of 5 years ago, I found my sexual abusive foster brother on Face Book and made an attempt to contact him against my family's wishes. Again, I didn't know why, but I did know that I wanted to tell him that I forgave him. He did not respond after I sent my first message, maybe out of shock, but upon the second time that I sent him a message, he wrote me a quick paragraph back and it brought such closure for me. He basically wrote an apology and confession, explaining that he too was abused in the same way..something I never put into the equation. He said he didn't know why he did such horrible things to me, said he spent some time in jail but didn't say what for and was happy I had found Jesus. Although my family was against me contacting him, I think God meant it for good, at least he knows I forgive him and maybe I have planted a seed as he also mentioned he was not saved or as he put it "he wasn't there yet". We haven't spoken since but I have such a sense of release, no more guilt, no more bitterness, no more shame. I truly have peace.
