Fasting was not new to me. I attended a regular Bible study and began to grow in understanding through my own personal studying how the power of fasting is released when we forfeit a most basic life giving necessity. One of the teachings suggested how to fast beginning with one meal, at least once a week.
The Power of Fasting is released as taught in the scriptures when we relinquish a most basic life giving essential - Food.
Jesus taught in the scriptures how we should fast. He said, don’t go around looking hungry. Act normal, go about your daily tasks, so others will not know you are fasting and you will be rewarded. (Matthew 6:16-17).
The teaching on fasting is exceptionally sound. Jesus said the words “when” you fast, meaning it should be a regular part of a believing Christian’s life. Fasting is an essential part of receiving an answer from God as taught in Matthew 6:16.
The disciples said to Jesus, “Why couldn’t we drive the demon out?” We find the answer in Matthew 17:21 - Jesus answered, “Only prayer and fasting can drive this kind out; nothing else can.”
I remembered the scripture in Luke 11:5-9, - Jesus told the following story about a man who did not have any food for a visiting friend. Around midnight he went banging on his neighbor’s door.
The neighbor said, “Don’t bother me.”
The man continued to demand food and forcefully continued to bang on his door. He was not afraid to keep asking. Finally the neighbor gave him what he needed.
Jesus tells us, “Everyone who asks will receive, and he who seeks will find, and the door will be opened to him who knocks.” Of course, perseverance is needed, along with faith to believe that the scriptures speak truth. A promise for you written in the Bible.

Years ago I worked for Home Services of Montgomery County in Gaithersburg, Maryland. This particular job listed through an agency was for three months. If all went well I would be hired full-time.
‘Home Services’ is a profitable government agency managed by the county designated for patients released from Springfield State Hospital. The program helps the discharged patients acclimate back into community living. I was given the job title of Administrative Assistant and elected to do whatever needed to be accomplished. It was a very demanding job.
One Tuesday morning several of the patients asked if I would teach them how to use one of the older software programs called ‘MultiMate.’ After the session we stopped for lunch. In order to finish up some work I began earlier in the day, it was necessary for me to move a heavy typewriter to my desk at the other end of the building.
“I’ve got to get help,” I said to myself.
No one was around so I lifted the typewriter placed it on a chair with wheels and pushed it to my work space lifting it again to my desk.
The next morning while getting dressed for work I experienced pain in the lower part of my back. I did not pay much attention to it at the time. As a runner I had been accustom to a little pain once in a while and thought it would be gone in a couple days.
By the end of the week the pain became unbearable. I found it difficult to move, as though I’d been continually stabbed in the back with a sharp knife. I did not mention it to anyone at work because I thought my job might be in jeopardy.
“There is only one answer,” I said. “I need healing and when I begin this fast it’s going to take commitment and determination.”
I set up my fasting guidelines. I did not eat solid food but drank only liquids that contained no calories. I had read many books over the years on this subject. This schedule was my personal way of fasting; it worked for me over the years, and I stuck with it.
The first few days I did not experience any difficulty. I’d done this before and knew what to expect. The body wants food, and it will continue to remind you of that fact. I was still in constant pain and the pain became so intense I chose to sleep lying on the floor on my back.
I tried not to move as this caused severe pain. For one reason or another, I have never been one to take medication and it never really occurred to me to take an aspirin! I know that might seem like strange thinking, but that’s the way it was. I remember the agony of constant pain, trying to cope with my job during the day and trying to sleep at night.
In order to get up off the floor in the morning, I carefully rolled over on my side moving ever so gently, leaning on my elbow and then pushing up with my hands to a sitting position. Then I sat still for a full five minutes trying to muster up enough courage to get to my feet, determined not to miss any work. I had bills to pay.
I looked up scriptures in the New Testament and some in the book of Psalms. My resource book was Strong’s Concordance and wrote down all the healing verses I could find. When I was not working my eight-hour job, I wrote scripture.
After two weeks of continuous pain, I will never forget this one Monday morning. Rolling over to get up off the floor, I heard my back pop in two different places. I didn’t think much about it because I was still in pain. By 1:00 p.m. that afternoon my pain was gone. It never returned. Fasting combined with the power in the scriptures took effect!
I breathed a quiet prayer. “Thank you Lord for my healing.”
Sleeping in my comfy bed was a blessing. Later that same week, I heard another pop at the base of my spine. Not being aware anything else was “out of place,” God knew. My running and my heel hitting the pavement could have put that area of my body out of kilter. I am grateful for that unexpected healing as well.
