The Truth Named Me
In English my name means God is gracious. In Spanish my name means God is merciful. My name means hope, a possibility of something better after this life for those that have faith. God is gracious because He reveals His mystery of salvation for those who accept His everlasting love, which is life. God is merciful because He gives everyone, yes, each individual, the opportunity to know Him. I am blessed to be Gianna, because the interpretation of my name in every language defines the Truth and the Life. God is indeed gracious.
My name was influenced by a harlot, unfortunately. By a woman who revealed her skin on magazines for money. Despite her harlotry, my parents perceived her name as beautiful. It is indeed strange the origin of my name contradicts its message; however, I am the opposite of that Gianna. She does not define my name. I am the one who defines my name. No, He is the one who defines my name. As a child of God, I represent Him, as does my name.
My decisions and understanding before knowing God were flawed. I never knew the meaning of my name before I knew God. I always thought Gianna was a name misapprehended by most. I perceived Gianna as nothing but a name difficult to pronounce, yet effortless to make a joke out of. Every individual who has made jest of my name does not know its origin. My name is not defined by any specific woman as many have assumed. My name is defined by me and He who named me, which is not my earth father, but my Father; the Father of all fathers. I used to live for the works of my own hands, always making an objective to impress. I used to live for individualism, striving to achieve my selfish desires. I used to live in sin, drowning in my own iniquity, not knowing how to fill the void in me. Now I live for the Truth; I live to know the Truth, and the Truth knows me. The Truth saved me by grace. Who am I to question the Truth? The Truth named me, and He defined Himself through my name. My name is Gianna.
For all those who have turned my name to blasphemy, they never knew the interpretation. That is not their fault though because I used to not know either. When I was drowning in sin with a feeling of a dreadful lack of fulfillment, God knocked on my heart, and I accepted His grace and thanked Him for the mercy He had for my soul. I ponder from time to time of all the men and women who are living the life I used to live, not knowing or accepting that the Truth is attempting to help them all the time, they just have to Let Him. I do not blame them because I used to be in their muddy, tattered shoes. Now my shoes are white as snow thanks to Him who saved me. Do you not believe me? Look at the denotation of my name again. He was there all along, His grace waited patiently in my name until it was my appointed time to know Him. God is gracious, or should I say, Gianna.
At school people say my name was peculiar, difficult to enunciate. Before anyone knew how to say my name they would attempt to pronounce it, usually more than twice. They would say, “Gina” or “Gianni”. Most of the time, they would make inappropriate quip of my name, resulting in my shame for having such a name. However, now I see clearly. They do not define my name because my character defines my name, and He who created me defines my name, literally. My name is not an ordinary name in the United States. On the contrary, my brother’s name is Mark, which is a common name. Mark can either have a biblical denotation or be perceived as a derivative of a Latin word, meaning warlike. I used to wonder why my name was not simple like my brother’s name, but now I know why. My name is uncommon, because those who find the Truth are uncommon, but soon the Truth will be less uncommon, because God is gracious, or should I say, Gianna.
I would like to baptize myself under a new name. No, not a new name, but a new interpretation. Farewell to all the misinterpreted versions of my name. Goodbye to all the discourteous jokes and mispronunciations of my name. My name is no longer defined by them; my name is defined by Him who is present in my name. My character also defines my name, and I live for God, thus He is my name because he created me and my name. God is the Truth. My name is Gianna. My name is God is gracious. My name is God is merciful. The Truth named me.
