I visited a group home last night, a place of recovery for recovering addicts, as I understand it. Initially I was struck by the handsomeness of the young men being served and helped there. Maybe, in fact, their very physical attractiveness had contributed somehow to their problems.
There was an older man among them who at first seemed to be one of the recovering addicts. Perhaps he was recovering but not from addiction. I later learned that he had within the last five years been widowed. Now he lives among the young men and serves them as a trained counselor. It appeared almost as though he wanted to be mistaken as one of those being served there, but at the same time he would also go on to eventually identify himself as the live-in counselor. It was evident that he had a genuine fatherly affection for those young men. He had a way of looking directly into my eyes and into my soul as we interacted.
It reminded me of how Jesus was incarnate among us fellow human beings as another man among men. He stood in line with sinners as he awaited his own baptism of repentance, not minding being counted among them, yet had no sin himself of which to repent. If someone was around him long enough, though, that one would discover his unique identity, the Wonderful Counselor, Messiah and Redeemer of the world, a counselor whose own personal anguish had and would qualify him to be compassionate toward the anguish of others.
