The Strength Of Silence
© 2014
by
Stephen A. Peterson
Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silence and discerning if he holds his tongue.
Proverbs 27:14 (NIV)
Mark Twain, an American author and humorist, was at times asked to comment about those who opposed his writing. Twain sat down, lite up a cigar then stated: “It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.” He left his person reporting the alleged incident in silence.
As Mark Twain understood, there are times when silence has the loudest voice. Occasions arise when the best way to say a great deal is to abstain from saying anything. The eloquence of silence may be reprimanding, consenting, unanswerable, persuasive or peaceable. It may also be otherwise.
So when one does decide to speak and when does one remain silent? The answer is to obtain an education in the University of Good Judgment. The following are a few rules of thumb. When you:
1. Have nothing to say;
2. Have said enough;
3. Do not know how to say it;
4. It is the wrong time to say it;
5. Do not have accurate information;
6. Would hurt others;
7. Base what you say on emotions;
8. Know it will fall on deaf or ignorant ears.
This requires patience, character and integrity. As Mark Twain appeared to understand is that silence is one of the most difficult argument to refute or destroy when skillfully employed.
Prayer:
Almighty Father, protect me from talking without thinking as well as talking without considering what it is I am about to say. Help me to speak honestly and truthfully for all that is good and worthy of Your praise. I pray these things. Amen.
