Once upon a time way back in the distant past the world consisted of only caterpillars.
Quite a happy lot they were as they plodded around their soft city of green grass and plants, feeding on luscious leafs and drinking from misty little ponds of water left over from the early morning dew. Their little community was fenced with beautiful flowers of red, yellow, and purple scattered all over the hillside like dots of stars.
The caterpillars were a religious little group and lived their life with very few distractions as they clung to the plant they called home for days on end. They would only move off their plant when the steeple bell rang out calling them to worship, then in unison they all would slowly leave their plants and crawl past the monument that stood in the middle of their city. The monument was built in honor of the butterfly god. No one knew how the monument came to be placed in their city nor had any of the caterpillars ever seen the butterfly god.
Carl the caterpillar never missed a day of church. He loved reading from the ancient book that taught him about the God who created all caterpillars.
The bishop caterpillar preached that one time long ago the butterfly god came to earth as a caterpillar just like them. The bishop taught that the butterfly god promised all caterpillars they would one day become butterflies. He preached, we might not look like butterflies now but the butterfly god lives within us and will one day transform us into butterflies.
The ancient book said there were many who witnessed the caterpillar change into a butterfly. The butterfly god promised that all caterpillars who believed in him would one day become a butterfly and fly off into heavenly paradise.
The book also explained that back in those days there was a sect of very religious caterpillars in Jerusalem. They didn’t believe the message of the butterfly god so they killed him and he was cocooned. The ancient book taught that the cocoon couldn’t hold him, he came back to life and many saw him rise up into the heavens as a butterfly.
The bishop proclaimed that all we had to do was believe in the butterfly god that came down to earth long ago and became a caterpillar. He told us that the ancient book taught that everyone who believed in the metamorphous of the caterpillar would one day become butterflies.
The caterpillar church kept a picture of the butterfly god hanging behind the bishop’s pulpit. It was gorgeous. The butterfly god had four enchanting delicate wings. When the sun peeked through the chapel window and touched his wings, they became a kaleidoscope of color dancing before your eyes like many bursts of colorful sunbeams.
What a magnificent picture of inspiration Carl thought. How could anyone ever doubt that one day all caterpillars would become butterflies? Carl had never been happier as he left church and crawled back to nibble on the plant he called home.
Carl knew in his heart one day he would dance in the heavens as a butterfly but for now he would have to live the life of a caterpillar.
Carl lived a life of faith, three times a day he could be seen lifting his head up from his green leaf to the heavens in prayer. He led a silent life; some would even call it a boring meaningless life but Carl was at peace with his god.
He knew his life as a lowly caterpillar was only temporary. He could hardly wait for the day when he would be transformed into a butterfly and dance in the heavens as the ancient book promised.

One day as Carl chomped on mouthfuls of green vegetation he noticed he was not alone.
There, no more than a foot away from him was Athe the Caterpillar. Athe had just returned home from college. He was the first caterpillar in the city to ever go off to college, and the whole community agreed he was the smartest caterpillar in town.
Carl lifted his head and called out,“Welcome back home Athe.”
“Thank you Carl. It’s good to be back. I’ve missed our little town.”
“What's been going on around here since I’ve been gone Carl?”
“Not much, life has been pretty slow around here, We lost Sally to a black bird a few days ago.”
“How did that happen?” Athe asked.
She got to following the snails, thought she was invincible, she followed them down to the other side of town looking for happiness and a better life. There was a clearing along the way and she never saw it coming! Picked her clean off the ground in one swoop!”
“Well, at least she died seeking happiness.” Athe said.
Bishop said, “All who turn their backs on the butterfly god and go it on their own searching for happiness will meet a similar fate. Bishop said, true happiness can only be found in following the butterfly god.”
“Is he still preaching that old story about how we will all turn into butterflies one day?”
“Yes sir,” Carl said.
“Well, let me tell you something Carl, I used to believe the bishop with all my heart till I went off to college where they taught me the truth about the mysteries of the universe.”
Carl didn’t want to sound stupid but he didn’t think there was anything mysterious about the universe at all. He knew he was created by the butterfly god. The bishop preached the butterfly god created the eggs which became the caterpillar and all caterpillars will one day die and become cocooned. The ancient book promised all believing caterpillars would one day break forth from their cocoons and become butterflies just like the butterfly god.
“Carl,” said Athe. “Have you ever seen a live butterfly god?”
“No I haven’t, but there’s a picture of one in the church.”
Well, said Athe, “there are pictures of unicorns, leprechauns, and fairies, but we know they don’t exist. Look at yourself Carl, you have six legs with tiny little suction cup feet, you have a long hairy cylindrical body with six eyes, and you look more like a monster compared to your butterfly god. You better start enjoying life and stop believing all this nonsense about becoming a butterfly.”
Carl took another chop off his leaf just as Athe raised his voice a little louder.
“Seriously Carl, caterpillars are earth dwellers, our suction cup feet were made to ensure that we would never leave this earth and fly in the heavens. Time to give up the myth Carl!”
Carl took another bite from his plant and slowly chomped as he thought to himself, “I’m not sure I’m up to having such an intelligent conversation with such a learned caterpillar as Athe.”
No caterpillar in the city had ever questioned the existence of the butterfly god before.
“Your right Athe, a picture doesn’t prove the existence of the butterfly god but you’re here talking to me which means we exist so something or someone created us?”
“I know I’ll become a butterfly Athe, I believe it with all my heart.”
“Worm theology!” Athe sarcastically replied.
“You will never become a butterfly and there is no butterfly god. It’s all a fairy tale!” When you’re cocooned that’s the end of it. There is no life beyond the cocoon, period!”
Carl looked at Athe in astonishment. Before he went off to college he sang in the choir and would even teach a Sunday school class now and then. Carl wondered what kind of powerful magical spell the college had placed over Athe?
Just then a cocky black raven landed on a tree branch just above Carl and cawed out in a boisterous voice for all to hear. “Evil, Evil has arrived in your city!”

Since Athe came back to the community a lot of the caterpillars were beginning to question the ancient book. Athe told them the world was changing and no one on the outside believed caterpillars would ever become butterflies.
He said they needed to live for today, get all they could out of life before they died and were cocooned. Athe said, once your cocooned that's it, there nothing after the cocooning stage. The community began to break down and argue with each other.
Athe called the ancient book violent and intolerant. He said the church was hostile to all those who didn’t agree with their beliefs. Athe began to win converts over to his way of thinking. When the bell rang out calling everyone to worship the church was only half full.
The bishop looked out at the half empty church and began his sermon.
“We are living in evil dark times. Many of our members have forsaken us and are now following the lies of Athe. The question you need to ask yourself is why should you believe in the butterfly god? Can anyone here answer that question?”
Carl raised his hand. “Yes, Carl.”
“Well, life just doesn’t make sense without the butterfly god. If there were no butterfly god we would have no hope. We would be doomed to spend our entire life crawling over this earth and then die. I believe one day I will be transformed into a beautiful butterfly just like the ancient book promised.”
Carl heard a loud clapping coming from the very last pew.
“Bravo, very well said for a repulsive uneducated caterpillar.”
Carl arched his head and twisted himself around, there he saw Athe glaring at him. His appearance had taken on a wild ferocious look. All six of his eyes were protruding from his head and glowing a demonic red. All the fine hairs on Athe’s body took on the appearance of fang like spears and Carl could see all six of his feet were flashing what appeared to be the number 666.
Carl rubbed his eyes and wondered if anyone else in the church had seen this demonic apparition? Then he spoke.“Athe, I may be uneducated and repulsive to you but in gods eyes I’m beautiful. I believe the butterfly god loves me and one day he'll transform me into a butterfly. I don’t have to fight or struggle to become a butterfly Athe, I’m on the path to becoming a butterfly now.”
“I will destroy you!” Athe roared. He then disappeared.
Carl heard the Bishop calling.
“Carl, are you alright?”
Carl looked around. Everyone in the church sat silently staring at him. No one had seen or heard his confrontation with Athe. Carl felt weak and sat back down without saying a word.
“I must of blacked out for a second.” He told the Bishop. “I'm OK now.”
Church finished that day about twilight. As Carl followed the twisted path toward the plant he called home he couldn't stop thinking about his confrontation with Athe in church. Was it real or just a dream! As he neared his plant it glistened in a movement of black activity. He cautiously drew closer and then shrunk back in terror.
His home was being demolished by a legend of black ants.
The wrath had begun and Carl prayed that he would be able to stand.
```````````````````````````
Carl knew now that life as he had known it was over. His community seemed to be unraveling each day with a new disaster. As he searched for a new plant to call home he noticed an unusual number of black ravens circling above his community.
Carl began talking out loud to himself, “I've lost my home, Athe is attacking me, evil is surrounding me, and I seem no closer to becoming a butterfly today than I was yesterday. Carl wished that he could move his life backwards, he certainly would have stopped Athe from going off to college but he knew time would keep moving forward whether he liked it or not.
Carl rounded the bend on his path and there stood the perfect plant. It was tall, wide, and had luscious eatable green leaves.
“This will be my new home.” Carl began his slow climb toward the greenest, fattest, leave on the vine. He had barely settled into his new home when he heard a voice yell out.
“Having a little trouble with life Carl?”
Carl looked down from his new home and there stood Athe.
“Where is your invisible butterfly God Carl? Why isn't he helping you? Maybe he just likes watching all your dreams crumble!”
Carl yelled down to Athe. “The butterfly god will make all my dreams come true soon Athe. Nothing you can say or do will ever change my hope. I well become a butterfly.”
“Well,” Athe snorted, “You still look like a worm to me!”
Carl determined to never lose hope no matter how much he suffered. He knew the butterfly god had a plan for his life. As Carl looked down at Athe glaring at him he began to feel a little dizzy.
He found himself hanging upside down, he was spinning around and forming what seemed to be a shell. Was he dreaming or was he being cocooned? Everything was now dark and Carl knew that a tremendous amount of activity was taking place inside his cocoon. Then he thought he saw a little bit of daylight, Yes, now he was sure of it. He found himself surrounded by the warmth of the sun, what has happened to me? How long have I been cocooned?
Everything seemed to have happened instantly.
Carl looked down and noticed that Athe was still there with a look of horror on his face as he screamed at the top of his lungs----”It's true!!! it's all true!!! You've become a butterfly Carl!”
Carl felt himself floating off his leave as he looked down at Athe.
Athe watched as Carl's brilliant wings glittered in the sunlight. Carl appeared to be dancing as he darted back and forth in the heavenly blue skies, Carl's journey on this earth was over, he had become a butterfly just like the ancient book had promised.
The last words Athe heard Carl utter before he disappeared in the heavens was: “You only have to believe Athe.”
