As stated in my profile, I currently have many roles in my life. I am a wife, mother, daughter,aunty, career woman and above all I am a worshiper. I was thinking recently about how all these roles sometimes clash and often make me feel a bit put upon and taken for granted. I will think, why do I have to do everything? Why can't so and so do their bit? Why is it always me that gets the phone call to go somewhere, do something or sort something out?
As alway's, when things get too much for me and I feel as if I'm becoming overwhelmed by my responsibilities, I go to God and ask for His opinion on the matter. He, of course is always willing to share His thoughts with me as He is with us all.
I began to realise that the problem sometimes is that I feel that when I am doing stuff for other people, I am neglecting myself and my own needs. I feel as if this will make people think that I am somehow less than them, particularly if they don't appear to have any regard for my needs or feelings. I then feel that if I don't assert myself, they will continue to take me for granted.
While I was talking to the Lord about it, I remembered a passage in Phillipians 2 : 5-8. The NLT version of the Bible puts it like this;
'You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God,he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges;he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.'
The key point in this passage for me was that Jesus knew who he was. He was God! Yet he was willing to put this aside and do what he came to do out of love for us. This tells me that in serving others, I need to be aware of who I am in God. I need to know that in his sight I am complete. Salvation is mine, righteousness is mine, grace is mine, the joy of the Lord is mine and every other promise and inheritance we have as children of God.
I am as Peter said, chosen, royal and God's own possession. (1 Peter 2:9). This frees me to serve others with confidence, whether they appreciate it or not. Giving myself, my time and my love without holding back because that is exactly what Jesus did for me.
