Just You And God (Matthew 6:1-6)
“But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly”.
Have you ever been with other people and then suddenly felt an urgent pull on your heart to get alone with God? It often happens to me, although (sadly), there have been times I was not able to get away from people and respond to the tugging. However, the thing I value and cherish most in my life is my time alone with Jesus. I believe that this is something He values and cherishes too because He loves to spend time alone with us.
The relationship between a husband and wife is strengthened and enriched when the two people set aside time to spend alone with each other. The same is true of any relationship. It is during these times alone that people can bare their hearts and get to know each other in a deeper way. It is a time for sharing secrets and finding common ground. It is a time for overcoming issues and making weak links strong. This is how it is meant to be in our relationship with Jesus. This week’s eWord is an invitation from the heart of the Bridegroom Prince who is calling you into the secret chamber to spend time alone with Him!
“Go into your room”. This means remove yourself from other people and situations, including telephones, TV etc. If you have gone into a room where you are physically alone but you are constantly responding to text messages or email, you might as well just stay with the crowd! Jesus said “shut your door” because it is good to disconnect our minds from whatever else is going on in our lives or around us. If we have stepped into a place to spend time with God but our minds our whirring with all the things we have to do, or the things that are currently happening in our lives, we are allowing our ‘alone’ time with Jesus to be crowded by the world. I have found it possible to experience the same sense of aloneness with God in the middle of a busy airport lounge by drawing an invisible line around myself, putting headphones in my ears with worship music on, and disconnecting from everything and everyone around me. I also often simply invite the Holy Spirit to come and help me to focus on Jesus and feel His presence. It always works!
Place of revelation. There are wonderful things we learn about God in the public place, through group teaching and prayer. But there is a realm of revelation which only comes when we step into the secret place, the place of His presence, and we look upon the brightness of His face. It is the place where Deep responds to deep. It is the place where we experience joy unspeakable and real glory! Jesus said “Pray to your Father, who is in the secret place.” Important people can often be met in a public setting, but you need to have a personal relationship or special connection to be able to have time with them alone. This is the privilege we have with our Abba. Jesus is talking about approaching God in the security and assurance of our family connection, knowing that we can access His presence any time because of our place as sons and daughters.
“But you, when you pray…” There are thousands of people who profess the name of Christ but confine themselves to routine prayers or their Sunday group experience. Jesus says to us “You be different”. Public prayers are wonderful and effective, and so necessary, but the door to the secret place is found in the heart of the one in love with Jesus. It is only the heart in love that pursues intimacy and sincerely seeks to have more of the One who loves us. God is calling you to higher ground, dear friend; to the mountain tops where you can sit with Him and sip New Wine, and feel the power of His love divine! And there is always more because He has promised that every hungry heart will be filled.
“Your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly”. Many people are seeking power in their lives and in their ministries but it comes from being in the secret place alone with the Lord. What you breathe in when you are feasting at His private table is what is released when you minister in the public place. There are signs and wonders meant to be following you but they get deposited when you sit to dine at the table for two, and lock eyes with the Beautiful Bridegroom – the One who is filled with love for you.
Friend, the enemy constantly tries to stop or spoil or hinder our times alone with Jesus because he knows that we are filled and empowered when we fellowship with Him. There is victory and overcoming in the presence of the Lord. There is strength and peace and healing as we get closer and rest in Him. Find time to get alone with Jesus today, and let it become your necessary addiction every day. His heart burns with love for you and He is calling you, precious one, into the Secret Place!
