Once some confused disciples, seeing a seemingly good person fall short, asked Jesus, "Then who can be saved?" To which Jesus replied, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God." Peter replied that they all had left "their own" to follow Him. (Luke 18 v.28) Jesus went on to assure them that it would not go unrewarded. Think about those words of Peter "our own." It is more than families, and possessions and professions, it is a mindset. It says that there are areas of our lives that are yet our own. It says that in many if not all ways we still see ourselves as belonging to ourselves. It has been aptly put that the opposite of faith is not so much doubt as it is the attempt to control. But Peter was saying that they had left "their own," left behind this mentality of belonging to themselves to follow Jesus, to whom they were beginning to understand that they rightfully belonged. We are told also at the beginning of the Gospel of John that Jesus "came unto His own but His own received Him not." That is, they were unwilling to welcome Him as their Owner, Creator and soon to be Redeemer, to whom they rightly belonged. Paul wrote to the Corinthians that they were "not their own" but that they were bought with a price, the price being the precious blood that Jesus shed right down to the last drop for them and for us. Paul was telling them as his words are still telling us by the Spirit that they and we need to live like Jesus owns us because He does, and not like we own ourselves. We are a purchased people in the best sense. As believers we are Someone Else's property. Many people tend to take better care of other peoples' property than they do their own, as well they ought and hope that others would do so for them. We hear the saying: Finders keepers, losers weepers. Really? If it is you or me who loses something, would we want the finder to carry that mindset? If they did we would be assured of probably not having restored to us what was lost. This mindset of not being our own needs to be reestablished daily and hopefully in some new areas as well as the old ones. May God help us all in this.
