Gospel
After Pilate conceded to the demands of the “chief priests” and the ‘people’ to crucify Yahoshua, he wrote the following superscription (the charge for which He was condemned to death) in Greek, Latin and Hebrew: “THE KING OF THE JEWS.” See Luke 23:38; Matthew 27:37; Mark 15:26.
The three gospels all agree on the last five words. Since there were probably many in Jerusalem who went by the name of Yahoshua, Joshua or Jesus, Pilate would have probably been more specific and written “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews,” as rendered by John 19:19.
In any case, it was the last five words that offended the “chief priests.” Scripture records they later besought Pilate to change the inscription, to which he responded: “What I have written, I have written.” See John 19:20-22.
The governor of Judea may not have realised that this writing of his, however brief, had far reaching implications. In it is a hidden code that spells the name of God in the Hebrew language. The name revealed to Moses out of the burning bush: “I AM.” See Exodus 3:14.
“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”
Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὁ Bασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων
Iēsus Nazarēnus, Rēx Iūdaeōrum

ישו מנצרת, מלך היהודים

That is why the “chief priests” were upset about the text. Their own accusation turned out to be their condemnation. It suggests, not only had they crucified their King, they had just nailed their God to the cross. No wonder Thomas exclaimed, after meeting the risen Christ: “My Lord and my God!” Great is the mystery of salvation! I wish you all a very “good Friday”, blessed Passover and happy Sabbath!
